Ok I am going to work on a sci-fi rpg and wanted to know if there was anyone who wanted to help me with it. I was leaning towards a western/detective game and title wise I was thinking of Shadow of Deception.

I like the sound of this....
When you say western, do you mean as in cowboy western or western market (aka grimdark)?
Either way, i'm game

Also, will this be a pencil and paper rpg or a miniature rpg, or a bit of both? What will the rules mechanic/s be? what miniatures could be used/ Your first entry was quite vague.

When i said western I meant that there was going to be gun fighting and stuff like that. Also it is going to be a pen and paper rpg and it's mechanics will be based on d20 and d6. Also how do these races sound:
human-self explanatory
Trols-can also be toll, troll, or trolz. They are seven foot tall, lean muscled creatures with 3 tusks(2 going up on the side on going down in the middle), pointy features, little brain, and no set skin color. They are generally overly bored, curious, and barbaric race but some times they can act "chivalized".
Tecno-the literal translation of their name is "children of iron". They are basically robots.
marow-The marrow are a younger race. They are around 5' tall, have oddly pointy features, and have an overall greenish-brown skin color. They are exceptionally smart, however, few of them make good casters or mercenaries.
Vergesson-the vergesson were one of the first races to treed the galaxy but now are a failing mercenary empire. they tend to be around human sized and often have a purple or blue hue to there skin, hair, and eyes. What they lack in physical prowess they can more then make up for in speed, charisma, and brains.

This is what I had for stat wise:
CS-combat skill(0-20)
SS-shooting skill(0-20)
PO-power(0+)(ranged1-15)
AR-armor(5+)
SP-speed(0-100)
BR-brain(0-100)
RE-resilience(0-100)
CR-charisma(0-100)
AT-attacks(0-20)
RN-range(0+yrds)
RoF-rate of fire(1+)
WT-weight(0+(no set measurement))
DR-durability(1-20)
HP-Hit points(1+)

Seems like a ton of stats, and 0-100 is a impressive spread for a d20/d6 mechanic. Not that there aren't ways around it.

What i had in mind was that when you needed to use a stat you divide it by 10 and the round appropriately. So if you have a Sp of 53 when you test it's 5.

Then why not just call it 5? Tracking detail that doesn't matter is a waste. I'd also argue that offering upgrades that don't matter (I.E. You level up/spend XP! You get a +5 to Sp so it goes to 58.. Which gets you nothing!) is more annoying than fun.

well then how would you do it to show that people on the same level of a stat might not actually both be able to use it as well?

In your example, there's no mechanical difference in play from 53 to 58, either... The ones digit is it's just a number that does nothing (unless you have an idea on how to use it).

I'm not quite sure what your question means, though. If we're both equally fast, we're both speed 5. If you're faster, you're speed 6 or I'm speed 4...

If you're using perks/flaws/ or advantages/disadvantages or feats or similar you can also use those to add specialties. For example, a 'Marathon Runner' feat that makes it easier to maintain speed over a distance, or maybe a feat that specializes in moving while shooting or something.

It's your call, of course.

when i said divide by ten and then round appropriately i meant the if you had a sp of 53(5.3) it would be a 5 but if you had a sp of 58(5.8) then its a 6. Either way i thought of several ranged weapon types:
semi-auto-regular guns.cheep, with decent ammo but weak and short range
bolt-full metal jacket. decent range and power.
laser-self explanatory. expensive but huge ammo reserves and accurate.
blast-essentially a burst of energy. temperamental and weak but so long as there is air there's ammo.
strike-lightning. hard to aim but deadly.

Just to give some more thought on this, I think the 40k RPGs use a system vaguely similar to what you're suggesting where the ones digit is a 'bonus'. I don't have the rulebook for any of those games at hand, though.

The main thing is to avoid having numbers that don't do anything.

ok I was thinking of changing it to just the number plus d20, d10, or d6 for most tests anyway. especially for close combat. still if I did that are then any ideas for how to make the shooting work?

Well, you're probably going to get into Serious Math here, which is not my strong suit.

I would, however, recommend thinking about what kind of genre you're emulating. Yes, there's generic systems* that can try to do anything from hard sci-fi to pulp adventures, but they usually work best for a certain genre or theme.

Do you want 40k-style shooting as a lead-in to close combat, or more real-world long-range sniping with melee as an afterthought?

Stat+d10 would mean that an 'average' sh

*As another thought... Are you more interested in setting or systems? If you're more into setting, is there a reason you aren't just looking at an allowed add-on for an open system?

I am actually looking for both a setting and a system. and combat wise it'd be more like a shoot out leading up to getting up close(most of the areas thought of are cities, facilities, or ships but there are exceptions).
