So me and my buddies were debating on which RTS is the best of all time. I came up with the Command and Conquer Gernals: Zero Hour Expansion. That RTS was absolutely so balanced and fun. I would say that the game was a little more balanced then Starcraft. I'd also put in Age of Empires as a good third place game as well due to the balance in that also.

So which RTS is the best of all time in your opinion?

Age of Empires and Dawn of war are the only RTS game's I've played. Maybe Endwar would count aswell. That one is very well done, for a console RTS, crap on pc. Oh and Mark of chaos, that was woeful.

Retridubtion might kind of be RTS, but is woefuly inbalanced. Carnifexs and Swarmlord > Everything else

So my answer is Age of Empires 1, 2 and maybe even 3

I much preferred Rise of Nations over Age of Empires. But I
only played Age of Empires a little bit.

Total Annihilation. Better than starcrapped in almost every way before starcrapped was even released

Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance also gets honorable mention, as does DoW2:Retribution.

I dunno if I really consider that an RTS... then again, its battle is real-time... but the strategy itself takes place in turn-based gameplay.

The total war series are... Odd for genre.

The battles are real time tactics but the rest of the game is more of a civilization-esque empire sim.

I've probably spent more time in Warcraft 3, than any other game. This includes ladders, and custom maps.

Total Annihilation
First 3d RTS as far as I know
one of the only rts's with actual hit detection
Horrifyingly complex compared to "modern" rts games
hundreds of units
Crippled and unpopular due to low-sight units, manual aiming with radar, and lack of "magic" abilities on the units.

It was hardly unpopular-- it actually beat starcrapped and its exansion in quite a few polls and reviews for several years after release, and it sold quite well... but Cavedog really fethed up financially and released Kingdoms, which was an utter flop and generally disliked. And low-sight units? They had longer sight range than starcrapped units. Though true, its AI needed some improvements, that was something modding fixed.

polls and sales are two different things, just ask double fine
psychonauts is one of the best games every made, and it sold less than 1/10th of the copies of that 50-cent game.

Kingdoms was released because cavedog suddenly lost funding and they rushed it out the door, with all the post-release patches it isn't /too/ bad, but the TA engine doesn't lent itself to mellee combat.

It wasn't unpopular in sales, either. It just didn't have the raw luck of inexplicably being popular in South Korea.

With Cavedog having gone down, it was almost a decade before it got a digital release. Sadface.

Hmmm. Probably AOE2 (Loved everything in that agem except for the damned trebuchets...), then DOW1, Sins of a Solar Empire (TA in space! ), Warcraft 3, Rise of Nations (Loved everything but the rock-paper-scissor stalemates. And nukes.), and finally Starcraft.

Imagine the feeling when you position your tanks, engines idling, landing gear deployed for a low profile, with firing solutions along a key bottleneck. Then some fether lands a dreadnought behind them in a giant heat shielded coke can.
