Thus far for my Dwarf Army I have:

Dwarf Warrior Kinband: with axe and Shield Painted (3 companies)
Dwarf Archer Kinband: bows (3 companies)
Giant Eagle

all painted.

I own the remainder of my Dwarf boxes, and 3 boxes of rangers.

To be as effective as possible with a small game (1,000 points or less) would veteran players recommend for my next formation:

Dwarves with 2 handed weapons first
or
Dwarf rangers, and if so, how equipped?

According to our local Dwarf player, Rangers are not very good. Dwarves with 2H weapons are always good.

As dwarves are my fave WotR army, I will say that I am enamoured by any dwarves with 2 handed weapons.

I prefer dwarf warriors kitted out as such, but dwarf rangers with the same set up are just about as good.

Dwarf warriors with 2H weapons are to be considered compulsory first choices.

It is dwarven law, afterall.

It seems the issue with Dwarf Rangers is their stats are slightly less appealing, yet their cost climbs when kitted out.

Personally I see value in them, and will go with the 2-handed weapon advice and paint those first. My group uses a lot of terrain, it seems essential in WoTR, so I am intrigued and excited with the option of Pathfinder in my force.

I can tell I will not use them as much as regular Dwarves (indeed I may only use the rangers with 2 handed weapons and sell the rest, we shall see). Although, how can I not have a unit of rangers with bows? Some heed to fluff and flavor is required.

I use my rangers as Erad Luin, thrown weopens and pathfinder (master) as well as decent stats and either 1 handed or 2 handed options. Not cheap 60pts per company but pretty nasty. Lets not forget they also have ambush... If your playing with lots of terrain these guys are gonna be nast

I just wish you could charge after using thrown weapons. I'm going to ask my group to house rule that one.

WOAH!!! No need for a house rule, you've been had. Check the entry for thrown weapons again. They specify that you can charge after using throwing weapons. The last sentence of page 58...now go forth and kill orcs.

I like Dwarf Warriors over Rangers. Rangers get some shooting, sure, but Warriors get stupid high defense.

Some pretty nicely painted Rangers there. It's great that your group is enjoying WotR. It really is a superb system. It's sad how it's often it's ignored in favor of 40k/WHB.

Thanks everyone. The most difficult aspect about getting new players is the initial commitment to an army -- it is not an easy task. Once they play, and have a sense of, "ownership", the game sells itself.

On that note, i am making a Mordor 1k point demo army. I'll post my rough thoughts (about unit choices) shortly if you'll be kind enough to give me some pointers.

Coupla freebies:

Gothmog is awesome.

Use of Khamul the Easterling will generate generous complaints of cheese and OPness.

I learned that the Nine are Abroad are pretty awesome today. You look at their rules and think, "Oh, the combined powers of all the Wraiths. Cool." You don't really appreciate it until you use The Nine, though. Not much use to you and your 1k demo, but I was amazed.

Other Random Thoughts on Mordor:
Morannon Orcs are Great.
Castellans of Dol Guldur are slow, but tough as nails and hit like a ton of bricks.
Warg Riders=win.
Khamul(as mentioned) is broken, the Betrayer is kind of ridiculous, Dwimmerlaik is fun and the Tainted is sick against other evil armies.
Morgul Knights(Errated into Mordor list) are pretty sweet.
Orc Trackers are nice.
Shelob will destroy formations without breaking a sweat, but dies to magic and Epic Shot.
