Okay so the title isn't clever but that's neither here nor there. So yeah! I'm newish here and came for all the tips and tricks that lurk in the forums. I'm making an Imperial Guard army (very slowly) as my first foray into 40k, and hopefully it'll turn out respectably.

Welcome

Ive just recently started guard (a year ago) and I have got 1.5k, what kind of army are you looking at? any ideas?

I wish I had time for all the game systems I own, let alone want to own...

Well as of right now I've got the beginnings of a tank-heavy army, since that's really the reason I picked IG over anything else. I'm working on painting most of what I have now and it's taking a very long time. Even longer than I expected. The owner of my local game store came up with a list for me to work off of, which was a relief since I wouldn't have known how to start that. I figure I can use that as a base until I can get some experience, if nothing else.

What's your list if you don't mind me asking? I've got a more infantry based army with some heavy support, how many tanks have you crammed in?

Well I can't seem to find where I have the list written down so I can't be completely specific, but I'll give it my best shot.

HQ: Lord Commissar
No elites as of yet but I was thinking of replacing a squad with stormtroopers, or maybe adding a psyker squad if I can manage it.
Troops:
2 veteran squads with 3x meltas and LC, with Chimeras w/heavy stubber
1 vet squad with 3x meltas
An infantry platoon of undetermined size and composition
Fast Attack: Vendetta gunship w/heavy bolters (which is causing me no small amount of grief trying to get the TL lascannons)
Heavy Support:
1 Basilisk w/heavy bolter
1 Leman Russ w/lascannon
1 Leman Russ Demolisher w/lascannon

Most of my vehicle weapons will be magnetized so I can switch them around, and this is probably going to end up around 1500 points.

That doesnt look half bad, mb put one of those LC vet squads on foot and mount up the melta one without the LC, so you can get to firing it a bit more? Or maybe thats just me.
I had a few LCs left over from my heavy weapon squad sprues, and those doubled up nicely, seemed a good scale, and didnt need too much work to join together, so if you have a box or two of them thats a good bet. Otherwise, if you have a mate who plays SM of some kind, he might have spare lascannons from a razorback sprue? Hope that helps

Oh right oops the 3 melta/no LC squad is in the vendetta isnt it. Maybe give that squad demo charges? thats always fun to throw when you hop out of a scouting fast vehicle...

Nope, I haven't even had a chance to try out what I've got as it is. I'm still putting everything together. Plus a Medusa might be a bit out of my price range at the moment

Thanks for all the welcomes everyone!
