Well my name is XCom because I almost burned my eyes out playing ufo defense for countless hours. I typically don't have time or sit down with a game that long. I got tons of friends hooked on it and I just cannot see how they want to make a remake. I don't feel that this game should be made at all, unless they go by a recipe that's at least CLOSE to the original. I've watched the trailers and I can tell this game is going to tank. They could have this into a masterpiece if someone in the studio actually played the original, which I doubt. Plus what's up with the 50's setting AGAIN. If I remember correctly this is being developed by the company who popped out Bioshock. Why put them in charge? Give it to Bioware, or Square Enix or my neighbor. Not them! I can't recall very many people who played Xcom Ufo Defense that didn't get excited when they saw this was being made. Then everyone found out what they can kind of expect, and people got angry. Who is really looking forward to this, honestly?

Look at Fallout 3. I think what Bethesda did was amazing. Sure, it was very different from the original game and at first I was reluctant to play the game. The company obviously did the research because they incorporated what people loved from the original. You still got Vats and the setting and atmosphere was represented great. Plenty of things to do, very different but in a good direction. I enjoyed that game a lot and New Vegas as well. The developer of XCom is taking the name and several similar features from the original and throwing what people want out the window.

I hated playing Fallout 3. VATS doesn't change the fact that I
really like the top down iso perspective, and VATS doesn't
change the FPS perspective while exploring. FPS games are
claustrophobic, no matter how open their game environments
are.

I'm with you on the Xcom remake.

Behind you

Hehe, I'm just finishing a runthrough of X-com myself....just making the final spacecraft and then up to the alien base.

Anyway, I absolutely hate the new 50's setting for xcom. Plus they have a time limit on the missions (otherwise the obelisk of uber-destruction comes and kills you). A proper remake could have actually seen the XCOM series essentially break new ground at the same time as returning to it's roots.

I've played the fan remake, but again, pretty much just adds more aliens and UFO types, and some textures and ai smoothing.

Through the looking glass

I really didn't like Fallout 3. Well, for the first few hours it was fun because of super thick nostalgia goggles (huge fan of 1 and 2), but then it started wearing off and I was getting bored with it. I never got bored with the originals.

As for Xcom, I'll admit, I didn't start playing it until last christmas, but still, when I played it I grinded it for countless hours on my laptop. This new remake...eh...I'm on the fence about it. From what I've seen your just one guy in this town, no longer watching over the entire earth and setting up bases everywhere and all that. I'd much rather be doing that. Still, it might be alright who knows. Like you said the people who made bioshock are making it, so it has some potential as a game by itself.

I love the look of the new Xcom, mostly because I love 50's settings and the aesthetics look interesting.

I liked the original but I am seeing this as a totally different game that just happens to have the same name.

Main problem I see though is that xcom is a bit of a cult game, hence developers might not think its appealing to the masses

Have to conform with the lowest common denominator to make a good profit Days of classic top down games are dieing out

I love XCom. The remake? Not XCom.

People go "Oh, look at Fallout 3, it's amazing!".

I'd still take Fallout and Fallout 2 over 3 and New Vegas any day.

But then again, at least Fallout is in the same canon as the original games. Why are they putting XCom in the 50s? It doesn't make any sense. Not only that, it's being made by the people who made Bioshock 2; which was far from great.

Yeah I still prefer the original fallouts. I noticed if you did like the originals you probably hated the new games or were not that fond of them. Then the new player base who never even heard of fallout hated the originals. I would get the comments, "this game is to hard!" or "this game is too boring and slow."

Yeah the old school top view games have pretty much died out, which is sad. Baldurs Gate 2 Shadows of Amn, games like that will probably never be replicated. Maybe because to many people just want instant action.

Can't say as I agree with that. I'm a huge fan of the originals and, thought the new one's don't touch the old ones, I enjoyed 3 and New Vegas quite a lot. As did some of my friends who were in the same position.

Maybe, but I was pre-disposed against it having grown to hate playing
Elder Scrolls action chop socky fps.

For me it's a bit different, I loved the originals. As for the new ones they are good games, but they aren't fallout games to me. It's just another post-apocalyptic RPG.
