For some reason my 360 just stopped reading games. It was fine last night but today it just says "open tray" when I have a game inside. I tried turning it off and restarting while holding the A button, I tried hitting the top of it while the tray closes, I tried cleaning the tray. But it still wont work, I just want to play space marine and dead island

Sounds like the laser has broken. Only solution is to send it away, if you have warranty, or buy a new one.

I feel sorry for you as I had this happen as well though mine was 2 days after getting it.

EDIT: Have you tried using other disks?? Such as CDs/ films as it may just be the game disk.

Before you send it away, try buying some of that canned air. I heard from a friend that that can sometimes work well. Just stick the long air nozle into the disk tray area and blow off any dust.
Has anyone tried this method?

This happened to my Xbox ten times.

The first eight, I sent it back. Two months, each time.

The ninth, I just replaced the laser.

The tenth, I stopped using the Xbox.

Sounds like you got bad luck or something. My brothers had his xbox a good 6 years and its working great.

It's one of the models of disk drive they use. Two work great, one fails some of the time, and the other is held together with clear tape and paperclips.

I REALLY, don't want to send it in, I believe the warranty will be dead once Christmas rolls around. I will try the canned air stuff though.

also, I did try other disks

Look at a local shop, sometimes they're faster and can replace the laser for you. Of course they void your warranty I believe, but its an option.

Compressed air gets real cold fast, so remember to keep distance from the lens or wait a bit for the condensation to clear before turning it back on. Other than that it's a good test.

When it happened to mine it was out of warranty so I had to actually open it up and unplug the lens, surprisingly plugging it back in helped it. In that case it was just the connection being loose.

Also if I remember correctly when I sent one in they extended the warranty by a month. Try the compressed air and maybe a cotton swab if that doesn't work, after that you'll have to risk it and try fixing it yourself (voiding your warranty, as will anyone but certified technicians) or send it in where they must either repair or replace it. Be sure to disconnect your hard drive if possible if you send it anywhere. A friend of mine worked where they processed them and it was standard procedure to remove and dispose the hard drives.

Light some incense and chant prayers to the Omnissah.

Worked for me.

I have plenty of incense, but I don't know any prayers for the Omnissah.

Is their a place I could go to learn such prayers?

But then you'd need to say "Aktiva cons sequentia. Librius machina auroris dei. Praise to the Machine God. Deus Mechanicus. Anima Mechanica, exsuscitare." everytime you wanted to turn it on.

While using the air be sure to say
"Oh great Machine God, we implore thee to cast your benevolent gaze upon this vessel, the Xbox 360. Let your burning power seethe through its circuits. Let your undying wards lay upon its disc reader and power supply. Let your mighty anger spit forth destruction and vengeance through the great mysteries of RRoD and overheating. Invest this mighty armoured shell with your spirit and breathe life into its power relays and conduits.

Mechanism, I restore thy spirit. Let the God-Machine breathe half-life unto thy veins and render thee functional."

Edit: This contains a few.
This has a couple more missed by the article.

Here're things you could try:

1. Clear the system cache from the console memory without a game disc inside the console

2. Try playing the game without an attached HDD or MU/USB

3. Check your save games folders for any corrupted data(Data files with a yellow triangle and an exclamation mark inside), if you find any delete them

4. Power Cycle your Xbox i.e. Disconnect all the power cables from each other as well as from the power outlet for around 30 seconds to a minute then reconnect everything

5. If all of the above don't work just have it repaired either from microsoft or from somewhere else

Sheffield, United Kingdom.

This happened to my Xbox last year.

It will usually read the disc if you open and close the tray a few times but it will get worse (at least mine did). Before I sent it away to get repaired it had gone from having to open and close the tray 2 or 3 times before it would read the disc to not reading the disc after twenty minutes of constant opening and closing.

Best get it repaired my friend.

I would open it up, but I still have the warranty...I think.

I would rather send it in for repairs that I know will work than open it up and possibly break it.

Very true...

and for the record, it didn't work

I'm gonna try the canned air. and if that doesn't work I'm gonna see if I can find my warranty.

Send it away, you have your warranty.

For future reference: Try and install games you play. I find that helps.

Outside the DarkTower, amongst the roses.

This has happened to my box fifty times, what i found works best is a dvd cleaner with spray or alcohol, give the disc a misting shake it off but make sure there is a little juice still on it and clean it. This kept my outa warranty xbox going for a year before i got rrod.
