Hi guys, after a lot of drooling and, admittedly, saving of money I'm finally ready to dive into CTA.

Now here's my question: What exactly does SFoS offer in addition to the revised version? I've read Russ' review where it mentions ship variants, space stations extra scenarios, special actions like 'scramble scramble'. Just to be absolutely clear, these things are not in the revised edition but are only available through SFoS right?

As for the SFoS counters, are they needed or are these already included in the revised edition? Or do they only offer a few extra counters like space stations etc. compared to the revised CTA? Or does CTA simply have the rules of those new ships but not the corresponding counters?

The reason I ask all this is because I've absolutely no way of looking at the product myself. That's right, here in the Netherlands there's not a single gamestore that sells the stuff. Luckily for me I've found 1 (just 1!!) Dutch internet store that sells the line but they don't sell SFoS on the premise that 'everything in there is in the revised edition'.

So please put my doubts to rest. I want to order as soon as possible!

Well, SFoS is pretty much the standard these days for campaigns...
Aside from that hmmm...the counters, there are a few pages of extra counters in the SFoS set but for the most part I would suggest avoiding it in favor of minis...There's some info on the Mongoose forums as to which counters are added...

Well, if you just get revised edition, you have enought to play. SFoS adds more ships, and more special rules like additional special actions, boarding action rules, breaching pods stuff like that.

The SFoS book does NOT include counters, however there is a SFoS counter pack, which has all the new ships, plus counters for all the space stations.

The problem is you can't ONLY buy SFoS, because you need to core rules presented in the CTA boxed set.

They did release a $10 starter set, with rules and just ship infor for some narn and centari. I've not seen the exact contents of this set, but it may be that getting that, plus SFoS would be the most affordable way to get everything.

Thanks for the reply guys, I will be getting SFoS then.

Luckily I can afford going the expensive route, I've been saving up the last couple of months for just a wargame splash like this.

I plan on getting the revised rules, SFoS, SFoS counters, the Vree and the Brakiri fleet boxes and the GF9 template and counters. That should be enough to give me a solid start and get my friends interested.

Buying everything in one go will also help to keep postage low. Once I get going I'll start investing in some more fleets.

I've seen the starter set...it's not worth it for anyone seriously thinking about the game...it's good enough for someone who you might not have an idea if they would like it but when they say basic they mean it...There are no special rules at all...They don't even have fighters in it...Getting Starter and SFoS is not an answer...

This isn't directed at you, just a comment for everyone's knowledge...Starter Set is a very thin book (3-50 pages?) and really only seems to contain the basics; Initiative, Movement, and Shooting...Even the ships have cut back stats so as not to confuse anyone since the stats don't carry over...

Seems like they've created themselves a kiddyfied version to as bait as well eh?

Pretty much...
It's cheap and basic so anyone can learn it...not a bad idea all in all for kids or just plain folks who don't have as much expirience with model game systems...
