How rare are they? Because no one in my area is getting into Warmachine, and there is a Magic scene already, I just thought I would hop onto that bandwagon and play casually.

But I'm a sucker for Red Heads, and Chandra, or whatever the fire heads name is, is a damn good card from what I've seen. Any packs that would garruntee a Planeswalker pickup?

I work at a store that sells them, so availability isn't an issue.

You can buy them online, for a price though...

If you buy a fatpack you can usually get at least one planeswalker... but then you usually end up with a feth load of cards that never get used for anything other than trade fodder.

Buying packs to get a specific card is a waste of money and time me working out odds for you, singles is the way to go.

Chandra Ablaze ~$4 (US)
Chandra nalaar ~ $3 (US)
Chandra the firebrand ~ $17 (US) should go down if she doesn't make it in a tourney deck

Note that the cost of one chandra the firebrand is about 4 boosters which you aren't even guaranteed a mythic let alone chandra, and a fat pack is just horrible value, get a booster box it's twice the price with 4x the boosters and still no guarantee of chandra (but good if you collect).

Also $17 is cheap quite for a semi good card for standard, extended and maybe modern, stoneforge mystic (a rare) was around $20 before ban and is still at about $10

A fatpack is a decent way to get into the set if you're not willing to put down the 80$ for a box. You get a bunch of commons the experiment, and trade fodder comes in handy.
But yeah, if you do really want a card then you should try to find it individually. It'll save you a lot of effort.

Another good way to get into the set is through Draft tournaments. They're educational in that you get to learn what makes a good strategy and you get to see how a lot of cards work.
Also they're a little easier to start out in because you don't have to build a deck beforehand. You build your deck at the start of the tournament out of three packs. This way everyone has the same opportunity to get good cards when building the deck. You're not expected to compete with someone who put down 100$ on their deck.

Second the Draft tournament recommendation. It's a good test of your card-evaluation and deck-building skills. And you don't have to deal with the wealthy "Mr. Suitcase" types who throw money at the problem. Also, I think booster draft tourneys for any build-type game are fun.

Well, I bought one of those 9booster pack cases, just to be on the safe side, and ended up getting Sorin. Not bad, not bad at all.

And I got a whole hell of a bunch of Zombie Cards, so I think I am being told something by... someone.

If you want to go zombies, it's a great direction for a casual deck, with lots of possible builds. There's also a ton of fun zombie cards in the newest set (Innistrad), so see if you can get some of those as singles.

Sorin's not a good card in tournaments, but he's just as potent as any other Planeswalker on the kitchen table. Plus, he's one of scariest in EDH (Yeah, that 40 life? Let's bring it down to 10).
