Hi Dakka!
So I've just come back from October's TOS (first week) after taking my crazy eldar list. And after some great games, was pipped to the title of best Eldar by a single favourite army vote. I scored one more point in games than the guy who won my category, but he had an extra favourite army vote and pipped me. Gutted, as I thought that my army was quite different, and it would have been nice to win!
My list was:
Eldrad
10 x Wraithguard w/Spiritseer + Singing Spear (Conceal)
10 x Wraithguard w/Spiritseer + Singing Spear (Conceal)
10 x Wraithguard w/Spiritseer + Singing Spear (Conceal)
Harlequins w/Kisses x 6
Harlequins w/Kisses x6
Harlqeuin x 1
I know this looks insane given the current meta, but I had great success with it (and fortunately avoided dark eldar all weekend!).
Game 1 was Capture + Control / Dawn of War vs Imperial Guard. Nasty list with lots of plasma + Melta vets, as well as 2 Leman Russes, and an Executioner with no less than 5 (thats FIVE) plasma cannons. Fortunately I got to go first, so Eldrad and 2 units of wraithguard were 3/4 accross the table by the end of turn one. If the game had ended earlier than turn 7 i'd have won, but the final shot by the final veteran on the final wraithguard on my objective sealed the draw.
Game 2 was Annihilation / Spearhead vs Raven Guard. After Shrike's infiltrating terminators finished powermashing 2 units of harlequins, I managed to take them out with some concentrated wraithcannon fire. Nailing another tactical squad got me the narrow 3-2 win.
Game 3 was Seize Ground / Pitched Battle vs Blood Angels. This game was quite interesting, as I hadn't came up against the sanguinor in quite some time. Deep striking Furiosos with blenders got blown to pieces quite early on, and the harlequins managed to take out a nasty terminator squad as well. I ended up getting the wipeout at the end of turn 5.
Game 4 was Annihilation / Pitched Battle vs Blood Angels. This was another interesting game, but I was lucky that my opponent didn't play very aggressively. More deep striking dreadnoughts got shot, in what turned out to be quite a cagey game.
Game 5 was Seize Ground / Dawn of War vs Blood Angels (again!!). This game was easily the most exciting and enjoyable game of 40k i've ever played. The chap I was playing also won the best painted army, which was absolutely stunning. His sanguinor was done as sanguinius, and it's honestly one of the nicest paintjobs ive ever seen. After 3 turns of nip + tuck positioning, he went into overdrive, tank shocking 2 units of harlequins with Land raiders! Both units (to my utter horror) fell back, leaving the wraithguard to get charged by angry terminators + an assault squad. The wraithguard held though, and when the harlequins rallied, it literally turned into one almighty scrap in the centre of the table. After 3 turns of literally clubbing each other to death, The Sanguinor jumped out to assault Eldrad's unit. The whole game basically boiled down to my turn 7 - 5 Wraithguard needed to kill the sanguinor (with one wound left), otherwise he would charge me and pull me off both the objectives I was holding. Eldrad failed to cast Guide, Guide, and doom, thanks to the earlier immobilised Librarian Dreadnought. So it was down to pure blind luck! 5 hits, 5 wounds, and.... JUST dying! Literally the whole game rested on that unit's shooting. An amazing game which I just sneaked 2 objectives to 1, and worth the price of admission alone.
So i'm really delighted with how the Wraithguard got on. I'm really disappointed not to have won best Eldar, but I know that the Wraithguard are a force to be reckoned with. That having been said, I think Eldrad is long overdue a holiday. Next up for me, are my Necrons!
So any other GT stories from the weekend? I'd love to read more!
