Well, I was looking for a new game to jump into for the next five or so weeks and found Sword of the Stars 2 on Steam. So I decided to inspect the game closer. Upon doing so, it looked like the game plays like SoaSE (Sins of a Solar Empire for those who do not know) except the play follows a turn based structure, at least from what I got.

So I was wondering, what does fellow Dakkanaughts think about this game?

Sots 1 was amazing, its a much more complex version of SoaSE. Much more fun in my opinion. Its got quite a steep learning curve and its very hard to master but the game is completely on its own level when it comes to games in the genre. Definately worth picking up if you like the empire building sort of games. It gets released in just over 2 hours I believe, no sleep for me tonight thats for sure!

Good to hear! I have liked the style of game play with depth and length. Interestingly, I would love to see it break the Sci-fi mold that most, if not all, 4X games seem to follow.

Hey, I am a huge SotS fan (I also like Sins). Don't buy SotS2.

Sword of the stars 1 is a great, great 4x strategy game. plus its like $5 on steam at the moment for the game and all three of its expansions- truly one of the best strategy games, although, it has terribad voice acting... beyond that, its got the simplicity in areas that need to be simple and complexity in areas that need depth. Its wonderful and I strongly recommend it if you're into the Turn based/Real time hybrid.

SotS2 is another story.

Its not the game is bad- although what I've played so far hasn't particularly impressed me- the problem is they released it way before it was finished. The publisher threatened to cut them off, supposedly... depending on who you ask... but the end fact remains the same: They pushed it out when it wasn't ready and the game is totally unplayable. Getting into combat, if you can make it that far without the game crashing, causes the "end turn" button to break. Carriers don't work, at all. Trying to build colonies usually causes the game to hang. Most of the tooltips are missing, so good luck figuring out what stats mean. There is no options screen, at all. And the list goes on and on.

So give SotS2 another month at least to see if they patch it into something playable, much less enjoyable... but SotS1 complete won't treat you wrong if you give it the time to learn its ins and outs.

Ya, I noticed that as soon as I fired up the game.

Hopefully it will be fixed in a month or I lost $40. Oh well, I need to do more research into a game before buying.

Here's to hoping it will turn around
