Hey there. I've recently been looking into LoTR, and have three small questions:
1.) Is the game dying out?
2.) Is the game any fun? Does it offer any tactical depth? For example, I haven't seen any recent updates to the game, and each faction only has a few warrior choices. Do these offer flexibility?
and
3.) Is the game somehow akin to 40k playstyle wise? It seems to have more similarities with that than with WHFB. Thanks.

Staying on target.....

Ok I'll try and answer as best I can I only play the SBG version.

1) Yes I suppose it is really, which is a shame because its a good game

2) Yes there are tactical approaches that can be taken to the game, these will mainly revolve around using your heroes might, the placing of your banners, use of magic and when you charge. I find these are the pivotal points to a game

3) Yes it can be, being a skirmish game, it's a lot less dense and also there are no units everyone moves seperately giving you huge flexibility but not necessarily mobility, especially if you want to use uruk-hai pike blocks and the like. The biggest difference possibly to the other two game systems is the turn, you roll to see who can go first, one person move then the other, one person shoots then the other and then a combinied combat phase. Sounds odd right, but it works out quite well. Oh and the other unusual thing is no armour saves, at all. Instead your heroes get fate points in which they deny a wound on a 4+ but once its used its gone for the game! And even the mightiest heroes don't have all that many.

Well I hope this helps you, but even though It's a dying game, it's a lot of fun and a castle seige with any two sides is awesome

A quick note on question #1 - Yes your right recently lotr has been getting quieter but GW just renewed their license earlier this year and bought the rights to producing figures from the new 'The Hobbit' film which is in the process of being filmed. (personally can't wait for that film since I'm a huge fan, although it is in two parts). So this means there will be a big boost to it soon, so your choice if you feel like getting a head start.
