Huh, I thought for sure someone else would notice that Gears 3 got beat out by Dark Souls. I found that very odd.

An obscure game known for it's ball busting difficulty beat out one of the consoles main eclusives. Dark Souls may be multiplat, but it sure ain't mainstream or anything.

Not that obscure, it got notoriety for being that hard...
A lot of people bought that one who hadn't bought the first one because of that.

You're missing out the other thing though.

Gears 3 sales didn't count the consoles which sold with Gears 3 bundled.

The Wii is god amongst consoles if you are drunk...

And that's why the Wii sold so well at its launch.

Not because of the hardcore Nintendo fanboys, but because it was a cheap and easily accessible/used system.
