So after seeking a fair amount of inspiration from these forums (Mechanicum Jon's stuff really helped to show me what crazy awesome stuff you can do with an original paint scheme) I have decided to start a small army of around 1000 points worth.
I started off by impulsively buying an Archon and some Hellions because [i]reasons[i].
I've just sprayed that first lot and I've decided to paint the riders separately.
I'm playing around with a dark green scheme on the skyboards and I'd also like to try out a glowing effect for the engine and exhausts but I've never had much luck before, any general tutorials would be appreciated.
I've also ordered the battleforce because I can see myself using everything in there and I've got 3 more reavers because once again I think they look cool.
Ordered some additional stuff as well that may take me a fair bit over 1000 pts but I don't mind getting carried away. Yup, that's another pack of hellions as well, I don't see 5 being useful as it is.
Had issues with the chasis not going together too well so I'll have to get some liquid greenstuff or something to fill gaps. I'm going to ignore the instructions telling me to glue the gun mount down because that looks to be easily removed and swapped out.
Also I've had issues with the stand and the sail so I think some magnets are called for in this situation. Can anyone recommend a size of magnet for this job? I was thinking around 2mm by 2mm should do the trick.

Really like the crisp colours you've got on those boards mate, very nice indeed!
I've magnetised the gun, sail & pilot on my raider. Why so many? The gun was bound to snap if I didn't, and the sail DID snap off. It kinda seemed like a good way of representing when the weapon was destroyed or the ship immobilised (remove the pilot), but also as like you say it's easy to swap out. Magnetised sail means I can swap between the 2 different styles to represent enhanced aethersails and what have you.
I think the magnets I'm using are 1mm wide... Measure the width of the depression for the gun turret on the raider and it's sorted. You'll want some kind of non magnetic tweezers though, was a right pain to fix in

Well previously I've had a CSM army which I've decided to sell due being pretty bored of them and not satisfied with the paint scheme. And I've had a regular SM army too and I've found that you've got to a few transports and it seems to hold true for DE.
Oh and I'm not looking forward to doing many more raiders, I very nearly ruined the chasis which usually happened with my old Rhinos.
On the other side of it the Hellions were a complete joy to build, I really like the poses for those dudes.

Yep, it totally snapped earlier today for me, so far it's been one of the more annoying models I've ever made.
And I'm prepared to drill out some holes if i have to for the magnets, thinking of doing something for the guys hanging off the side as well.

Yeah, I'm not a fan either. It's the painting side of it that I like least of all, I feel like the blank areas area too small to leave plain, but too big to ignore, I can't find the halfway point and have gone through 5 different schemes on 1 raider. I'd prefer to use venoms, but don't want to be accused of spamming them.
You won't need to drill the holes out, for the raider at least, as the magnets just fit in the existing slots. Just cut the stalks off the sail & the gun mount and all will be well

Yeah I'm not sure what to do with the spaces either, I might use one or two symbols, weather it a bit and hope no one notices.
Yeah the stalk on the sail snapped in the slot.. I swear this raider has been taunting me. The base was even scratched up before I got it out of the box, partly why I decided to base it.

I picked up some of the Dark Elf shield icons (the evil face things), will see about putting them on there, though I need to work on my GS skills to make them look 'right'. Got one on the gun shield that looks kinda cool
I'd do runes but as I found out with my hellions, I can't make them look as good as I want (yet!). I use gold as my secondary colour which is fething hard to paint evenly. That and I haven't found (or made a concerted effort at looking for) good rune material.
Looking forward to seeing what you decide to go with

Yeah it sounds like a good idea looking for symbols from other GW stuff.
Right now I've gonna force myself to build everything before I paint anything else, my last force got put on hold partly due to how slow I was painting it..
Hopefully I can spray all of this stuff by next weekend and get back to the hellions. I'll keep you guys posted.

And I got some 2mm magnets in the post and I've filled some gaps on the Raider.
Unfortunately the test with the 2mm on the base didn't go well at all but I've now swapped for slightly larger magnets for the base.
Far from perfect but it has got the job done.
Messed about with the 2mm and I certainly need to drill them for the gun platform and the sail, which will be done Friday with a bit of luck.
In the meantime I finished off the wyches and I've started work on the reavers. I also bought a Haemonculus when I got some liquid green stuff from GW. I just cannot help myself in the slightest.

Finally finished building stuff and apart from a bit of drilling on the raider I'm done with glues and magnets etc.
Right now I have 4 Hellions "done", I've attempted OSL for the first time and I'm not sure how well it's come out but it'll do for now I think.
Last one needs more work on OSL and highlighting then tomorrow I can work on the riders.
Oh and I was considering redoing the gems properly but I can't think of a primary colour for the gems that will work with the rest, any ideas?

I'm thinking yellow, as it links to all of the dominant colours that you already have there.
Again, nice job on the paint work, really crisp

Cheers, I haven't got the steadiest of hands so it takes a while to do highlights.
Currently working on the riders and I'm considering what colour to do the cloth, considering Kabalites will have dark black armour with green highlights I want to avoid that with less "uniform" units. Maybe a brown ish cloth.

And after about 2 hours of work I have the first hellion finished. I hope to have the squad done by the weekend. The patches where flesh could be seen were a bit of a pain but I'm sure I'll speed up as I get through them. Edit: Second one done!

Quick update, I have 3 hellions done and the last two nearly there. BUT I've gone back to working on my Raider and I strongly considered destroying it out of frustration. After a couple hours of swearing at it, I've finally done the magnets to a level that I can accept and it's ready for spraying.

Agreed. I like the basing on the Radier too, any thoughts on how you'll paint this / what kind of environment they'll be represented as fighting on?

Thanks, I'm not sure what I'll be doing with the base yet, I'll probably do a few tests to see what works best.
I'll probably be having a break for a week or two so I can complete some course work and such other things, Damn university getting in the way of things.

Well it's been longer than a week or two...
But I will have an update this week! I've spent a lot of time just building and spraying stuff till I've had a large army enough army.
This week I will post the rest of my Hellions that I finished in late December, followed by 10 Wyches which I finished recently and by the end of the week I will post my Archon that is currently a wip.
So yeah I'm terrible at keeping my army update on here, sorry folks.

As promised it's nearly the end of the week and here are my Hellions.
I think I finished these just after Christmas? Something like that. I've got 5 more to do at some point but they aren't getting used much on the table so they'll be done later.
BUT something that will be used a lot are the Wyches.
I'm not terribly happy with the bases but oh well.
Aaaaaand onto my latest miniature, the Archon was just finished a few days ago.
I've tried to be a bit cleaner with my highlights and tried some more OSL. Let me know what you think.

I've had quite a significant hiatus as I focused on finishing the 2nd year of uni but now I'm back with something a little different.
I've been painting a few warmahordes things for a while now and I recently decided to buy the Trollblood starter pack.
Painting blue flesh has been an interesting challenge to say the least, 2 models complete and 2 to go...
With the second model I started blending the flesh a bit more.
I'll be doing more DE stuff at some point after I've finished the next two miniatures.
