It might be that the forum automatically switched you to the mobile friendly theme (it occurs when the site is opened in a resolution below a certain size IIRC); the mobile friendly theme is devoid of avatars and doesn't show previews when hovering over a thread.
To change it, click the 'Switch Theme' button located at the top of the page, at the end of the row titled "Dropdown Menus >>"
