Frost Ogres Commission
The army to be completed consists of:
Key:
Red=Assembled,
Yellow= In progress,
Green= Finished.
1 Tyrant
2 Butchers
1 Firebelly
15 Ironguts
9 Ogre (Bulls) with 2 hand weapons
6 Leadbelchers
4 Sabretusks
2 Ironblasters
1 Stonehorn
Now I had just recently been approached for my first commission, a Frost Ogre army project.
Put simply, the Ogres skin will not be of a normal human like tone but more of a dark blue/ frozen look. Similar to the Frost Giants in the movie Thor.
The first thing I did for the project was sacrifice one of my own Ogres to test out the scheme.
I ordered the P3 Trollblood paint set as myself and the client agreed it would match what we were looking for closely enough but still allowing some wiggle room.
The first test scheme.
After some discussion we had decided to go a bit darker. This fist test was done with just the Trollblood Base and Underbelly Blue mixed, with a small amount of Reaper Marine Teal added.
The second scheme.
Client was very happy with this result. I basically watered down some Asurmen Blue and gave him a quick wash. Note: After I finished this model, I cannot for the life of me replicate that exact look on the army. I'm following the same steps, yet their coming out a bit darker. Oh well. As long as the client is happy I can be happy too.
After receiving the clients miniatures I began to construct the army. With Fantasy I like the bases to have a theme and fit together with the rest of the group. My client gave me the ok to pretty much go crazy on these guys so I began theming the bases with cork. The idea was to give them a mountain appearance, with large stone formations carrying over to other model bases. I found that when working with snow bases its always best to add some kind of dark grey stone formation. It works well with the snow and gives some depth to an otherwise flat base.
Here is the first rank of 5 Ironguts. Finished for the most part.
Individual shots of the front rank (Crusher and Bellower)
More individual shots of front rank (Standard Bearer and some rank and file Ironguts)
So far the client is very happy with them. He loved the blood effect I had developed for my own Ogres and so I carried it over into his. I notice with many blue skinned Ogre armies that they begin to look like one huge wave of Smurfs with nothing breaking up the crazy amounts of blue. So I added the blood effect more aggressively making it seem as though the unit had just bashed the enemy to pieces to give them some contrast. The snow was created using Baking Soda, water and PVA glue, then sprinkling Baking Soda over the blob which in the end makes it look less like soap and more like fresh snow. It's hard to capture the effect well with the current light situation I have. Hopefully after the holidays I will have a better light set up and maybe a nice new camera for myself.
So there you have it, my first commission project and what a project it is!
I should have another update of the next rank of 5 by the end of the coming weekend if not sooner.
Let me know what you think and as always thank you for taking the time to look.
