"Follow the piper's tune through the streets at night..."
Hi all,
The start of the new year heralds the beginning of a joint blog between me and two of my friends: shockwave and c0un7_z3r0. Starting up Malifaux we're going to post our progress with modelling and painting our crews,
The first goal is to paint up a 25 SS crew to use later this year. So far me and c0un7_z3r0 have chosen what crews to start painting. What I've heard so far shockwave is starting up a Creed crew, but I let him present it himself.
c0un7_z3r0 has already started with his Leveticus crew as seen here: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/416066.page
I'm starting up a Hamelin crew and will later today pick up my first order containing: Hamelin the Plagued starter and clamshells with 3 extra rats, Obedient wretch and 2 Rat catchers. I know that I am going to need a lot more rats, so are going to try my sculpting skills. I hope to be able to build up a Student of conflict from spare parts and green stuff later on as well.
Lately when starting on a new model, I always begin with building and painting the base it's going to be standing on. I even go so far as to attach the model to the base before painting it. Somehow it helps me visualize what colours to use and what feeling to try and present through the model. With my Hamelin crew I'm going to try and make it so that bases have an urban feel, but would still fit in on a less urban gaming board. Pictures of the process will be posted here hopefully already during this weekend.
Stay tuned for more updates

So this is the first real post regarding the blog and the first step towards completing a 25 ss crew for Hamelin.
I'm posting the first WIP pictures I have so far. Didn't have much time to work on the models today. I cleaned them in some warm water and soap and started out removing the mold lines from Hamelin himself.
Whole collection:
Also prepared Hamelin for painting. Have chosen a few colours to be used.
The coat should be in shades of greenish brown and skin in a sickish yellow tone going to pale. I want to try out using purple light shining from some of the runes of the staff. So anyone has any ideas or knows of any guides regarding light sources and how the light is reflected off surfaces, I would be thankful for the information.
Also started working on the base. I want to use a sewer theme for the bases and hope to make them myself. I started with some plasticard and greenstuff. Want to add some water effect on the lower part of the base. Where the stones are missing, I'm going to add some fine sand to make it look like earth underneath. The small pipe sticking up, I have not really decided on how to use. I was thinking of a broken sewage pipe with sludge dripping or flowing from it.
Start of the base:
Hope to give some more updates tomorrow, but can't promise anything.

The base looks great dude! I would just go along as you got it planned! The pipe however could just be some rusty old pipe sticking up from the bottom without anything pouring from it, otherwise it might look a little overworked...

Thanks. I might just keep it as a bent off pipe then. Want to start working on it already now, but not really the best time

Managed to get some time over today for some modelling and paintiing. So I started off painting the base that my master will stand on:
Step1: Basecoat of Chardon granite and added a wash of C.G + Chaos Black + Water.
Step 2: The tiles are a mix of Chardon granite and Iyanden darksun. Layered with first more darksun and highlight with more and more Dhenedb stone. The mold is a base of Dark angel green, then drybrushed with first Gretchin green and then added Dheneb stone:
Step 3: My first real try to create NMM. Adeptus battlegrey washed with a mix of watered out chaos black and then more and more highlights of battlegrey and Vallejo Stonewall grey.
Step 4: Added sludge made out of Green stuff and added rust effect: Watered down Macharius solar orange and Beastial brown. Add more orange to mix with each layer.
Also started painting Hamelin himself:
Started with the skin: Dheneb stone with small amount of Darksun. Washed with Devlan mud.
Then added some Skull white to the mix and started to highlight:
Added a mixture of Vallejo Warlord puple and Asurmen blue the eye sockets and a mix of Dheneb stone and Asurmen blue to the lips:
That is all for this time. Hope to be finishing of the face till next post.
Over and out.

Looking good barry!
my only complaint would be the sludge, while it does look good it would look a ton better with some sort of water effect. I would cut out a part of the base to get a deeper recess and mix up some murky green semitransparent watereffect to get a sense of depht. Hamelin is off to an excellent start though, really nice skintones, he is looking suitably sick.
Ok and now i will present my plans for this blog! Some of you probably know who i am from my nurgle ork blog so i wont spend alot of time on any introduction.
I will be starting a Zoraida crew with a voodoo theme and my starting 25 ss crew will contain Zoraida, 2 wicked dolls, 2 stitched together and a teddy (just because its such an awesome model and it still kinda fits the doll theme)
I am also planning on doing a western themed board so we have something to play on and hence the theme óf my bases will be a western/dessert theme just to break away from the traditional swamp theme that you usually see on Zoraida crews. I also must say that i really, really, REALLY hate the zoraida model (both the old and the alternative sculpt) so i am looking for a nice proxy for her, something thats doesnt look as saggy and nasty. My first thought was to use her younger version from the avatar model but instead of floating she would be carried by a pile of dolls, the other idea was to find a suitable alternative from some other miniature company so if you know some cool alternative to a voodoo swampwitch let me know
I also have plans for a second crew, a Sonia Creed crew but more on that later
Ok now onto some pictures, here are the first four bases for my crew:
Let me know what you think!

Regarding the sludge and water effect. I skipped that step since I wanted to try using green stuff more and advance my sculpting technique. The sludge will be painted in a glowing colour (most probably purple).
I really like the bases you made and I can see that you started the "skull-count". c0un7_z3r0 will be overjoyed
What are the dominant colours you're going to use for your crew though? Since you're stepping away from the usual swamp theme.

Balefire_storm - I love that base, looks great! Abe might be right about the water effect but that doesen't really bother me. And the skin looks really sweet as well! I start to regret agreeing to this blog, my minis will look like crap alongside yours ...
Shockwave - Pretty nice bases! And since you will have a western theme going I actually like the skullz for once !
I should probably make a first apperance here as well, I'll see what I can do during the day...

Thanks for the kind words. But you're models look great, so don't worry about that. The blog is also for us to exchange ideas and tips, so that we all can get better at modeling and painting.
