I have a regular group that does Dark Heresy and other sci-fi games, but they really don't want to play fantasy sessions. Which is unfortunate for me, as I'd like some variety, and also unfortunately, I have a bit of limitations-- I don't have nor will I ever et a microphone (me talking would be too much noise and bother my housemates, and I don't like talking while I play anyway), so the only way I can participate in voice chat based games is if the chat function has a voice synthesizer (like Ventrilo) I can type in to. I'd prefer to simply have a text based chat system, instead, but most online groups want to use skype, and I don't know if skype has a synthesizer I could use.

I know not many people in this forum read this part of the board, so sadly I don't have much hope of picking up a group here.

But does anyone here have recommendations where I can pick up some other players and get a game on chat, say over Steam's chat function-- or YIM, or AIM, or etc? I'm looking mostly for a dnd session, preferably 4.0 (I haven't really had a chance to try it out yet past a few sessions in a group that immediately dispersed because of IRL stuff, which infuriates me), but I'm also willing to try out new (for me) systems such as legend of the five rings or second edition warhammer fantasy roleplay (the roleplaying game, not the card game).

The S-Run community is focused on Shadowrun, but does play other systems (Dark Heresy, Deadlands, Rogue Trader, Saga Edition Star Wars, WHFRP, ...) as well.

Everything is IRC-based with wiki- and dicebot-support. I would recommend simply dropping by in the channel (#s-run on irc.undernet.org) and asking if anyone is thinking about a DnD 4.0 game. The "Looking for Players" section currently seems to have open spots for a 3.5 game, though.

The website/wiki is just a repository for basic information - stuff like contact info and links to all the ongoing campaigns. Kind of like a bill board, really.
Everything is discussed and happens on the IRC. Interested players join the channel, lurk around, ask any questions they may have and (hopefully) hook up for a game.

At least that's how it worked for me. It could very well be that there is some function I've just not discovered yet, due to simply not having needed it.

Well, using the Spoony Experiment forum, the Imperial Guard Message Board, and here on Dakka, I've managed to get a couple people signed up and a few maybes, if anyone else from ehre wants to try dnd 4th with me as a GM.

I'd play if it was play by post, like on a board; but I don't really have the time to do anything live on irc or anything.

For me, play by post never works and never, ever lasts.
