Looking for some help brainstorming. In running leagues, I've been concerned about what I'll call
"loser's fatigue." Someone gets on a losing streak early, it's easy to get discouraged and drop out of a league. Most of all, I want all the players participating, engaged and having fun playing.
I had an idea, and a suggestion, on a way to change scoring, but it's totally untried so I'd love some feedback. Mainly, try to punch holes in it! Gamers like to break systems, so I'd hate to try it out and find out it's exploitable.
It's real simple. A league lasts, let's say, 5 games. In the first game, a win is worth 1 point; second game is 2 points; third is 3; etc. This would use Swiss pairings or some variation, so the further along the league, the more closely your opponent matches your skill level.
This makes a comeback more probable to encourage continued play. I don't think it hurts a winning streak drastically. It obviously weights later games, but the theory is those are more important anyway since the skill level is more evenly matched.
So how could it be abused? I guess you could throw the early games to get matched against weak opponents at the end. Strong enough reason to suspect someone would call for a DQ in my book. I'm mainly dealing with regular players, and I don't see it as a problem with these folks.
Any other ways?
