Hi 40k players, I just started wargaming, and I'm collecting grey knights. I don't want to paint them grey/silver/bronze or any similar color that would work with their theme though.
I am actually debating between blue and turquoise, and either way I would prefer to call them a made up chapter with some good fluff rather than just grey knights who don't look as they are meant to. I noticed when reading the codex though the issue of them having superior wargear to other SM chapters, so I'm unsure how to justify them not being grey knights in a believable way. Can anyone with more knowledge of 40k lore give some suggestions for ways they could believably be a unique chapter?

Do you want a DIY chapter or just another chapter?

The Mentor chapter coul;d be a viable alternative, they are elite units used to test new mechanicus equipment. They often attatch their units to other chapters to learn from them. However, they are sometimes forced to deploy many units in the same place.

If you want a DIY chapter there are a few things you can do...

you could say that they're a chapter who've gone around picking up relics etc.
That would get them unusual equipment.. Or you could say the ordo xenos/hereticus/malleus gave them stuff. (it's happened before, I think).

I searched the hereticus and xenos branches, would it be believable for them to be a specific kill team of the ordo xenos deathwatch? maybe a particularly honored group of ultramarine or crimson fist marines, if that justifies the color scheme. I wouldn't mind adding in a darker color as well to fit the deathwatch asthetic more.

You could say they are a Ultramarine/Crimson Fist task force assigned to the Inquisition...
