Hi all, thought I would share some pics and details of my latest project, a modular cities of death board. After doing a lot of research I thought I'd try using a wood router to carve the roads into some 16mm thick MDF, which I cut into perfect 2x2 squares. I haven't seen this done before, and it took me a long time to work out how to carve them out well- the very ends where the roads terminate can be tricky as the router wants to dive off the board and you end up with gouged in sections. Once I had all the roads carved out I smoothed off any lines in the road surface with a mouse sander and 120 grit paper.

So heres some photos of the boards so far. Aim is to build 8 sections up to full detail and then come back and add another 4 to allow me to run it as a full 6ftx8ft Apoc table!

I'm particularly happy with how the mocked-up gutters and drains look, all the boards will have those drawn on with a fine tip permanent marker eventually. I'm also going to buy and assemble some proper GW terrain as well, as I want this table to be extremely detailed- I still have to use the router to create some deep water channels, and even some thin long cut outs that I can sink some brass piping into to represent exposed power or gas lines? Either fully sunk in and flush with the board, or halfway out for really large pipes.

Would love to get people's feedback and ideas with this one.

Good job. I have a set of boards just like that back at the folk's house. I cheaped out on effort, though, and used Fleck-Stone spray over the whole thing to add texture and a dark concrete color.

Yeah man, I have a can of something very similar sounding- gives a lightly textured finish and a mid-tone grey. The only issue i've found with spray paints has been that they can produce a buildup of rough 'grit' when painted onto wood, this seems to occur to me a lot no matter if its hot, cold, wet or dry.

These boards will most likely be hand painted with several thinned coats of grey household acrylic paint (hardwearing interior paint), the thinner coats should give it a slight variation in tone. Im thinking of actually priming the boards beforehand with a reddy brown undercoat spray, this might help to give the table a dirty feel?
