TOURNAMENT GRADES
NUTSHOT - Advertising. Just stumbled across this tournament by accident one day looking for tournaments. They had room for 50 people but only 24 showed up. 24 is a good turn-out for a
RTT, but for a
GT you'd like a few more.
GOLD STAR - Food. Both days pizza was supplied (it was good pizza). It looked like there was enough for everyone (I didn't hear any complaints). That was cool because we didn't have to worry about finding some place to eat and then getting back to the games after lunch. Well done.
NUTSHOT - Time management. The games were all 2 1/2
hrs long, which in my own humble opinion is perfect. However, at times there were length delays between games to tally scores and determine placings. The lunch for day was about two hours long while placings were figured. That wouldn't have been too bad, but we only had one game left and most of us had a lengthy drive. I just wanted to finish and hit the road. I think most of this was becuase this was their first
GT, so I'm certain it will be better next year.
GOLD STAR - Prizes. There were hand outs during games and the top players all received store credit. I prefer store credit because I can purchase what I want with it. That would be great if I won a SOB battle force, but what the hell would I do with it? One thing I might recommend though is a trophy for best general/best overall, I think that would be cool.
NUTSHOT - Army lists. This wasn't a big deal, but to my thinking for a
GT everyone should have some decent copies of their army list. They had
AB in main store area, so I'm not sure why everyone wasn't required to use it. For example, my first round opponent didn't even have a list. I wasn't about to spend 30 mins adding up his points so I just took his word that he had 2000 pts and we played.
GOLD STAR - Venue. The store was easily accessible, the hotel was right down the street, they had two restrooms, drinks in the main store for purchase, and even though it got a little warm during the day, this was easily fixed by opening the doors.
GOLD STAR - People running the event. There was always a judge nearby and they always had an answer when asked. These guys worked a long weekend and I just wanted to give a shout out to them for all their hard work.
GOLD STAR - The cost. $50 for six games and lunch both days and good prize support was excellent. Very good deal.
GOLD STAR - Overall. This was the first
GT they ran and it was great. The few problems they had were handled quickly and efficiently. I believe they'll only get better from here. I really wish they would run two of these a year, but that might be a bit much. Will definitely be attending next year.
Next up: Overall unit review of my list. Why I chose it, what I expected, and how it worked.
