The Rebs look the best! Just saying, if they weren't fighting FOR slavery (although they did have a sort-of-reason, couldn't make a factory that grew cotton back then ), I would have supported them back then simply because of looks. That organised scruffiness they have is always appealing!

Not sure it was all about slavery to be honest... More the right to self govern rather than be governed.

The Union North was hardly a beacon of Civil Rights...

Alot more to it than just slavery.

I'd say you are very right there! Still a war able to bring our vociferous opinions.

But I'd rather game it than discuss it. dont know much about the political side t be honest, focussed more on the military side.

Yeah, as long as the Rebs and Yankees can fight on the gaming table, the argument is moot!

Still, it makes you wonder what would have happened if the South was able to coexist with the North after the war as a separate nation....

Awesome army, Big P. I love the mix of grey and butternut uniforms, with all kinds of different hats and other items mixed in. It gives them a really ragtag look, which is perfect for modeling Confederates.

Nice army, what rules are they for?

Bieng a Historian who has done some research on the topic I came to the conclusion that the 'right for self governement' and the 'slavery cause go hand in hand. Basically

All the states joined the union.

one by one the Northern states began to abolish slavery.

eventually when there were 13 states on either side of the argument, the south, led by Jefferson davis wanted to break away from the Union as the Union was against slavery.

This led to the formation of the confederate nation, which wanted independance from the North mostly for the right to own slaves. (why did the states have a choice to join the Union but not to leave it?)

After various events the Union Invaded Virginia. General Lee was asked to lead the army but refused, as he was virginian.

Many people saw this as an invasion of their country and joined the confederates.

Thats a very simplistic view of the causes american civil war. It should be noted that msny northerners were racists as well as the southerners, for many of the same reasons some people are racist today.

Not on ACW... I did an MA on 'British & German Airborne Operational Effectiveness 1939-45'...

Less exciting than it sounds.

But do you have enough for Frederickburg?! Approx. 73 000 engaged, which I think is the largest number in the war for the Rebels. Gettysburg was 72 000 and Chancellorsville not all engaged. And after Gettysburg the South just didn't have the manpower to field another army of this size.

I say this in jest, they look great

I don't play as much as I could. I blame society! And ninjas

Wehrkind: "Nah, see he yells the order, and when everyone looks at him and say "What?" he grabs the vox, hits a guy with it and screams "CAN YOU HEAR MY NOW?!" into the mouth piece. Works like a charm "

Funny thing to do on L4D [if you own the server] Bind the tank music to a key, then at quiet moments press it and start firing like mad at something behind your team whilst screaming 'tank' on voice comms.

That sounds brilliant. Would you recommend postgraduate historical study to a young enthusiast?

Yes... But its hard work.

@necrovamp

Your short synopsis was sorely lacking in particulars. You made it sound as if the North had outlawed slavery, which it hadn't. The Emancipation Proclamation only freed slaves in states that had left the union (ironic as the CSA was an independent country that had legally seceded, so they made a proclamtion for another country). The CSA left the Union because of States rights and unfair tariffs/ taxation. States rights were paramount to the founding of the USA and a strong central government was strongly opposed by the founding fathers, how they would be shocked to see us today.

/rant over.

Great looking minitaures btw!

its was written off the top of my head. but yes the union abolished slavery in the southern states that were in rebellion, that is, while the South had legally succeded the North didn't reconise the new country, it saw the southern states in a state of rebellion. (I belive that the North invaded the south illegally)

so yes you are right in that Lincoln emacipated the slaes in the south

but as the north didn't reconise the country it could be argued they were part of the Union still.

I suppose it depends on your view really.

I'm from the future. The future of space

In the end, it was all about economics. The north simply couldn't afford to have the southern agricultural output no longer be part of the union. People like to dress it up as being about freeing the slaves, but it, like most wars, was about money.

"My paramount object in this struggle is to save the Union, and is not either to save or to destroy slavery. If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone I would also do that."
-- Abraham Lincoln, August 22, 1862

Balance in pick up games? Two people, each with their own goals for the game, design half a board game on their own without knowing the layout of the board and hope it all works out. Good luck with that. The faster you can find like minded individuals who want the same things from the game as you, the better.
