I've noticed some models and sets are no longer sold on the GW website, such as Heroes of Helm's Deep or the blister of Lurtz aiming his bow. Are there any places aside from ebay where these could be found (not just the previously mentioned sets but others also)? Also, why did GW stop selling these sets, they're pretty cool and great if you want to follow their journeybooks?

I would dare say alot of Independet retailer, or hobby shops migth have them. And GW stopped selling their journey books due to the fact that they sold not enough. And that they also relased source books witch replaced them. Althou I did find several copies of said books in my local hobbystore the other day.

So in all your best bet for finding said moddels are the things I listed, or failing that post a note at your store and await a response

They still sell the journeybooks I think, but alas no sets to go with. Could you recommend any independant retailers that might sell them?

Ah yes they do, I forgot that. Hmm as for independet retailers I am not sure, I think it may varie from retailer to retailer really. I would ask around. I have one near me but that dose not have any shops in the UK as I am aware of

If you have any independent stockists around your local area try looking around them, they sometimes have a few OP models but your best bet is to get them off of ebay (I know you were looking for alternatives but it is the best place).

There is one store a couple hours away from me that has tons of old GW stock. I go there every now and then and just spend hours looking around at the cool old stuff

This bothers me more then the kits being cut in half for what you get. As my shop still has tons of old LOTR kits and it's been a breeze assembling a force. However the Hashairn and -all- of the Corsair leaders save for Dalamyr are gone. Same with the mahud tribemaster. Well feth. Let's hope GW has a second wave of LOTR finecasts in the not so distant future in May.

Yeah, a lot of fine models have just gone, and that's a shame :(
I looked around and couldn't find anything so took Deathstreak's advice and sniped a Theoden and Eowyn for my fledgling Rohan force for a bargain, although the shop Johnny-Crass mentioned sounds promising too for future plans: does it have an online store?
