Ebon Vanguard
"With Fire and Sword!"

Founding
-Crusade against Chaos in the 38th Millennium from a flawed gene-seed of the Raven Guard.
"Why were we formed? The Adeptus Mechanicus turned out an excess of Chainswords, that's why."
-Perceval Falkan

Demeanor
-Quick to act, prefers action over detailed plans
-Their gene-seed flaw causes their voice to be terrifyingly thunderous.
-Prefers to fight in close combat and kill rather violently.
-The fastest route to the battle is the best.
-Heavily prefers Storm Shields/Combat Shields and Power Weapons/Chainswords.
-Jump Packs common, even in Command squads.
-Deviates from the Codex in that they field more Assault Companies and squads than Tactical.
"Yes, we could flank around, push through the ruins, fall back to the Cathedral, and then maneuver through the undercity. Or we could descend upon them with fire and chainswords."
-Captain Sirius Korthan

Figures and Deeds of Legend
-Chapter Master Leonardo Corrigan & Master of Sanctity Vicarius Serhim
-Lost in the Warp after a Warp Rift appeared on the Home World, believed to survive.
"Forgot about us? No. The Rift did not open because the Emperor forgot us, but because He needed to thin the horrors of the Warp. Corrigan and Serhim are now His Missionaries of Death. Who could be better?"
-Rigel Geralt

Home World
-Candria
-Feudal World
-Four Kingdoms located in temperate forests separated by great deserts. The deserts are filled with religious sites, causing many crusades to reclaim the holy areas, each kingdom fighting in the name of the Emperor against each other. In the desert also live nomadic tribes. The Chapter tends to recruit from the Knightly Orders and tribes.
"They seem so eager to die. Do they know they are all fighting for the same cause?"
-Captain Vanius Dorn

Recent Events
-The 4th Company "Blackhawks" suffered heavy losses after a raid on the Chaos controlled ice world of Jinhar. Captain Gallaway was surrounded in the ruins of a frozen city after Chaos forces crawled out from the undercity beneath. The company held for a week against relentless assault before assistance arrived. They were relieved by Captain Dorn's 9th Company "Siegebreakers" with minimal losses. 4th Company was reduced to 40 men. One Tactical Squad, two Assault Squads, one Devastator Squad, and one Dreadnought remain. The 10th Company "Pathfinders" sent a squad of Scouts with 4th Company. None survived. A Thunderhawk Gunship and Transport were also lost.
-The 1st Company "The Undying" carried out a raid on Ork forces on an ocean world. Captain Morion's Vanguard Veterans cleared the Ork settlements on an archipelago, island hopping between the lands. No losses were suffered.
-The 7th Company "Steel Ravens" encountered a Chaos Chapter known as the "Night Horrors", consisting heavily of Khorne Berserkers. Captain Pyron and his men engaged in fierce close combat, eventually emerging in victory. Only three squads were lost. Luckily, many of the Berserkers killed each other in the heat of battle. Brother Rydell Maren has been given the honor of Company Standard Bearer after showing prowess and courage in the field. He gained the honor after beating multiple berserkers to death with his helmet.
"He killed how many? With what?"
-Captain Raoul Pyron

Fun Facts
-Due to their roaring voice, the chaplains can synchronize their chanting and the creeds can be heard across the battlefield.
-They have a high number of older armors ranging back to Mark 2 "Crusade" armor. It is not uncommon to see even Mark 2 and Mark 3 spread amongst the marines. Even Mark 6 is more common than Mark 7.
-The Fortress-Monastery lies on a mountain that acts as a border between the four kingdoms. It may be seen from each King's castle.
-When recruiting comes, a squad of marines is sent down the mountain to each kingdom, heralded by a deafening roar from the mountaintop. Whilst in the kingdom, the marines are completely silent, not speaking a word when choosing their recruits. The kingdoms make a parade of sorts out of it, the streets lined with people and Knights on horseback leading them into the cities. When taking recruits from the desert tribes, they normally have to be hunted down and captured.
-They are seen as mysterious, silent guardians by the people of their world. The only times they are heard by the people are during times of recruitment and invasion, their battle cries echoing off the mountains and striking fear into the hearts of the enemy and courage into the souls of the brave knights fighting beside them.
"If every other Chapter didn't break these down to make new models all that time ago, there would be a lot more Mark II's about!"
-Irian Norn

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I suppose the Warp just broke into our plane. A colorless fog covered the land of the Southern Kingdom and red horrors tore from the cloud, slaughtering all in their path. Daemons with horns and flaming swords walked out, accompanied by beasts. Their throats were fitted with collars and purple frills that rose when they attacked. They were truly a terrifying sight, moving silently on four legs. Some of our Knights attempted to move through the fog. None who entered the darkness returned and not even screams heralded their demise. We fought and held the best we could but to no avail. Our ranks were shattered as heroes and cowards alike were massacred by the monsters. All seemed hopeless as they pushed us back to the city, leaving behind scorched earth and corpses. I was sure it was over for us. Then a thunderous roar cracked through the skies and, on pillars of fire, the Ebon Vanguard descended. The Chaplains joined in chanting a litany as they met the Daemons face to face. No matter how many fell, the chanting never stopped, it was deafening. The Space Marines began to push them back to the fog and a new scream emerged among the roars, one from the fog. It was hellish, shrill and unending. We fought beside them the best we could. Alas, the closer we got to the fog, the more the terror consumed us. Then, from the front, two marines rushed into the fog with a roar of "With fire and sword!" When they entered, the fog dissipated as quickly as it appeared. The Chapter Master and Master of Sanctity were lost to the Warp, yet many believe them alive. Heh. May the Emperor protect.
-Ser Richard Jorah
