So...moving to the States soon, am a citizen thanks to parent but never really lived there for longer than six or so months. Going to San Francisco and getting odd-jobs, find a cheap place, get used to the US culture for a while, then do my post-grad education. Just wondering if anybody on Dakka lives there or has experience with the city. Places to avoid, places to see, good food, things like that.Thanks.
P.S. Please tell me that the dating pool isn't only hipster activists...that would probably drive me insane.

Been a long time since I've been to San Fran. Still, I don't think cheap and San Fran go together.

you should google the local paper and check out the classifieds, you can get an idea what you can afford for when you get there. depending on the job your looking for you can even start sending in applications/resumes before you get there so you can arrange interviews quicker.
look up some realtors and check them out with the BBB (better business bureau). If you can afford them they can help you find a place quicker in the better areas of town.
good luck with the move

How set are you on San Fran? It can get pretty expensive. Now you can move to some of the surrounding cities and take the train in, that might be a better option. Cali in general is about the most expensive place you can move as real estate and rent are pretty out of control in any of the major cities.

Fairly set, since all of my relatives are in the north cali area.
Also I'm not going to be living there long, just about a year or so, so I figure once I'm there I'll browse craigslist for student hostel/rent apartment with roommate -as opposed to actually buying or renting anything by myself. That would indeed be very expensive.

I thought you were going to San Francisco. You might find something cheap in Oakland...

My sister lives in SanFran, and she says her rent keeps her from enjoying her quite generous pay... by Midwest standards, as opposed to Cali standards.
"Cheap" and "West [or East] Coast" do not go together. The middle of the country is much more affordable, even accounting for slightly lower average paychecks.

I was told if youre straight avoid the tenderloin unless your with a group of girls. I guess a lot of cross dressing is involved in that area. Also, try not to flash your money at the guys who actually look like gang members, they might end up hitting on you by the end of the night/all night lol. Best of luck
