I was wondering who paints armies specifically for big events like Adepticon. There were some pretty outrageous armies from the look of it. GMM Studio's Ogre army for example. Are people painting their army with Adepticon in mind? How long are they taking?

I tend to think I am an above decent painter and am really considering hitting up Adepticon next year despite it being across the continent for me... and another country. Just trying to gauge lengths the people on here are going for their presentation.

Hell yes. The team tournament in particular - if multiple people are keeping the resultant armies, and you don't have a single person painting them all, you'll definitely be collaborating on a unifying paint scheme.

How long depends entirely on your skill level. It takes me a LONG time to paint up my armies, and procrastination doesn't help.

I have painted a new army, or two (in some cases) specifically for Adepticon every year since 2006.

2006: Ork speed freaks for Team tournament (4k)
2007: Emperor's Children (4k) for team tournament and Eldar for Championships
2008: Foot orks for gladiator (180 models)
2009: Chaos Daemons for Gladiator and Invitational
2010: Battlewagon orks for championship
2011: Wazdakka orks for championship
2012: Grey Knights for team tournament (3k)

I typically start painting in January, after the NFL season winds down. My wife says my year has three seasons, Motorcycle season, NFL Season and 40k Season.

Yep... I am practically building all new models for this tourney year! 4 New BWs to replace my 3rd edition BWs which are slightly too big.

Having a new tourney army every year usually keeps me buying models even though I have tens of thousands of orks.

I find one of the major draws for many players who have no illusions of finishing top 16 in a 256 player tourney is making some wicked models and showing them off and seeing everyone else's models.

I highly recommend going to these large events. It is a lot of fun.

Hell, it takes a major event for me to have the motivation to pick up a brush. If it weren't for wanting to show off at tourneys and leagues requiring painting, I would have grey legions.

Jesus man! Now I want to see all these armies!

I had some weird and wacky ideas. No way I'd make the top 16 for 40k and would probably enter something else to make the weekend full if I was playing and not boothing up to promote Coulee Carnage. I had some goofy ideas. All Harlie army and a mechanicus army using Nid rules. Dreadknight converted Swarmlord FTW! Or maybe like a Daemons army and just use them for both fantasy and 40k.
