I have been looking through the new WhiteDwarf mag and really like the look of the Necron models.

I picked up a codex last night from a friends and have been looking a few lists could someone tell me which would be better to start playing Necrons with.

if you want to make a competitive list try the second one for a start. in regards to the first one mss isn't as important as war scythe and res orb on lords. phaeron is optional. while triarch stalkers are sweet they aren't all that survivable and the fact is that they can all be popped by 30 points of smurf with a melta. scarabs are a must, try to pick some more bases up off ebay, or something of the like. anrykar is usually a waste of points i find but maybe you could make him work better than i can.

for the second all lychguard should be sword and board and again more scarabs for your spyder to poop out

If i was looking to do a kinda elite necron army can this work at 1500points?

Between the first list and the 1 below which could take on the likes of DE Mech, Draigowing and horde lists?

Yeah, this looks like it's going to be better as a close combat list.
Reason being, Imotekh also makes it hard for your guys to shoot, too (don't waste the Solar Pulse in your turn, unless you REALLY need that shot).
In fact, with night fight in play, having that many Lance-teks might not be such a great idea, as they won't be able to see much.
You've got an awesome Wraith Wing going, though, so I approve! *points to signature*
But as jy2 will tell you, you're gonna want to present your opponent with some additional juicy targets, otherwise they're probably not going to last long.
Perhaps drop the Ghost Arks (you're not really going to be needing them in a combat oriented list anyway) for an Overlord on a Command Barge?
As far as threats go, that would give you:
1 Command Barge
6 Wraiths
6 Wraiths
6 Wraiths
1 Annihilation Barge
1 Annihilation Barge
...
that ain't bad... but you'd be lacking anti-armor, so if you go up against a mech army, perhaps consider replacing a unit of Wraiths with Scarabs and some Spyders (build it up into a massive blob of Scarabs over the course of couple night-fight turns, then unleash them en mass).

the second list looks better in terms of competitiveness. might be worth having the bigger squad of warriors with the res orb lord because the orb will work slightly better with more troops (more can get killed but more will be brought back and because the bigger squad is a juicier target)

correct me if im wrong i just did this in my head but that list is only 1451 points I think. that means you could make all the lychguard sword and board because when they are 40 points a model they need that protection from power weapons, instant death, and monstrous creatures when it comes to it with the orb you get 3+4++4+++ and T5 with s5 and power weapons, its not all bad. so while they aren't as good at popping tanks they can sure take hits and tie up enemy units for ages. that leaves you with 14 points with which you could take another warrior with which to make two squads of 9

Find some way to get those Destruc-teks Solar Pulses.
I can not emphasize enough how much it will save your army when your opponent's long range weapons can't see your guys.
See if you can get some Mindshackle Scarabs on everyone who can carry them, too.

To free up points, I suggest your drop some Warriors out of the Ghost Ark (you only need like 5 in there anyway. Bump your big walking blob up to 20, so the Ark can fully replenish them)

Actually, drop two and give their attached Destruc-tek Gaze of Flame. That will help if they get assaulted.

My first question is what type of list do you want to play. Do you want to be more aggresive close combat list, do you want to be shooty, do you want to have lots of vehicles or be more on foot. Any models that you really want to use? What models do you already have? Sorry if you already told us but I missed it if you did. Until we know what kind of list you want to play cant really make recommendations.

Leth - hi, i have a battleforce and 2 barges. I have 2 razorbacks which i was lookin to swap for 2 boxes of Lychguard?

Dont really know how necrons play, have have had small elite armies in the past and the a super cheesey nob biker list so maybe look into a shooty necron list?

Can this work with a battleforce?

If you don't mind conversions, you can easily (and cheaply!) make the list you've described with the following:

1x Battleforce box
2x Command Barge box
2x Lychguard box
1x Warriors box

This will give you
1x Ghost Ark
1x Command Barge
1x Annhilation Barge
2x Overlords
10x Lychguard (give 7 of them the Sword&Shields, give one of them a Warscythe and model him to be a little different looking. He can be your custom Lord, if you can give him the ResOrb arm from the Barge Overlord).
5x Deathmarks (don't worry about the Deathmarks themselves right now. Use four heads and bodies of the Deathmarks and attach four Rods of the Covenant arms from the Lychguard box. Add some of the decorative bits from that box, and TA-DA! custom Crypteks).
Then of course, you'll have tons of Warriors to do with as you see fit.

Aaaaaaand, that's your entire army.
(with very minimal unused models)

... in regards to the Scarabs you'll have left over, if you decide to bump this list up into the 1750-2000 point range, they'll come in handy (if you're clever with conversions, you can turn a hand full of Scarabs into SWARMS of the little buggers)
