hi,

so theres a new commission painting service in the uk
it doesnt look fully legit.
theyve spammed up ebay with auctions for their services
their website says they have been working since 2005 "locally", but only show a gallery of 4 models.
their testimonials have no date, or pictoral evidence of work.
they request for full payment upfront.
doesnt mention names of employees, (whether its one guy or several)

and i cant find any other information about them on the web.

despite this, they promise fast turn-arounds and the prices seem reasonable

so yeah, are they legit?
anyone locally from surrey know?
is the quality good?

heres the link ->

Seems odd to me that it's £250 to paint an Ork battleforce but £240 if you were to get each seperate unit from the battleforce painted.

Oversights like that turn me off immediately to any e-tailer of any goods

EDIT: also, £80 for a heavy weapons team? That's basically painting 6 Cadians and 3 guns whilst a CCS is £40. Even if it's legit, I don't see why HWT takes double the effort of a CCS

Give them a starter commission and build from there....at the end of the day £25 - £30 is an acceptable loss....but a big army commision going wrong could hit you in the babymaker

Having looked at the website I would suggest that you have nothing to lose by ordering a cheap model....let us know how you get on

I'd recommend Ifalna or the Waaagh Studios in the UK if you're looking for painters in our neck of the woods.

I get the impression this is somebody just starting out, who has probably painted locally for friends or a gaming group and is now branching out on the web.

Which is fair enough and may explain some of the errors. Looking at the gallery the standard is certainly acceptable.

However I would never, ever, send my models and full payment in advance, even if a commission painter has completed several jobs for me in the past.

It's just too risky. Most services will ask for an amount up front, and the rest on completion of the commission.

There's just too much to go wrong if you given them all your models and cash. Maybe email them to see if they will take part payment, and also if they're insured for losses, just in case.

Hey there...

Wow....ok, I have actually been planning to introduce myself for a while, but were hesitant as I haven't been able to figure out the best way to do so...I made this profile on the 6th of May and sadly time constraints and my own shyness have kept me from doing what I SHOULD have done.

So Hi!...

My Name is Steve, and i am the Founder of Big Boss Painting!

Its nice to see folks have noticed us, and are investigating.....I'm just sorry that we seem to be getting off on the wrong foot :(

Big Boss Painting started out as a group of friends from our local Games Workshop (Staines, Windsor and Woking) who would get together and paint our own armies or just individual models and we began to branch out into doing individual models for people in store, and then we started selling some of our work on ebay.

Sadly right now our gallery is small due in no part to our stupidity at not taking photo's of our completed work...

This is indeed our "first time" stepping into the well trod fields of the custom painting services as settled company and our site is very much a work in progress. The feedback we get will reflect the direction the site and company as a whole goes.

So with that said, let me put some minds at ease...

Firstly...our legitimacy, team size, testimonials and turn around times

I am really sorry if anyone has come to the conclusion that we are some kind of con artists, scam group or thieves, this is not how we operate and it does greatly sadden us that our first "exposure" has been met by suspicion. But there is no one to blame but our-selves for not paying attention sooner. To put minds at ease if you have ANY worries at all please feel free to contact me. Big Boss Painting is has my full attention twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. I make my living doing what I love and myself and the rest of the crew at Big Boss push ourselves to do the best for our customers so that when they get the finished product they feel it is money well spent.

Big Boss Painting varies in staff between 1 and 5 people (including myself). Out of everyone involved in Big Boss Painting I myself am the only member who's full time job IS Big Boss Painting. There are plans in the future to include profiles on the team, including short biographies and individual galleries for each of the team! At this time it has been requested that names are not given, I know this is strange but the guys are little shy...for the moment!

Our testimonial section built up from the years of work we've done in our gaming groups and word of mouth. Sadly the dates of the work were forgotten long ago.

We quote short turn around times because when we work...its all we do. I myself spend 10 to 12 hours a day at work on commissions, other members of the team come in on arranged shifts. The average turn around time is 20 days, but we quote a baseline of 30 days on EVERY project in-case of issues with supply of models or artists time constraints. Larger projects demand a bigger turn around time, but we work hard to complete a project UNDER the predicted completion time.

Payment system...and prices

This is something that does annoy me, and I can understand that people will be VERY worried about paying "all up front". This was sadly instigated with a major flaw because of the desire to use a pay-pal store. We will be bringing the store down tonight in order to re-design the entire set-up to make it much more approachable and more in line with what the community as a whole expects from a painting service.

The individual items section is temporary and sadly due to unfortunate time constraints and obligations of time hasn't been completed. As i can see from certain posts in this thread it is a good thing this wasn't completed, and will be bringing it back to the white-board to fix a better value for money on the prices. Having extra sets of eyes looking at it (and reading it here) has shown the errors that were missed. I am sorry for this and it WILL be sorted out

Ordering

This is something that has hit me extremely hard. I am sorry that the system currently in place is putting people off. With the above mentioned overhaul on the website we will be introducing a better way of ordering. Until then, if people are wanting to find out more, take the leap or just want further information on us you can contact us at help@bigbosspainting.co.uk and we will respond as soon as possible!

The Ebay auctions were an attempt to get us noticed. I can understand now that in many ways they should have been better thought out...

How do we plan to operate in the future?

This is the big question isn't it...

We will be putting in a much better, wallet friendly and far more professional payment system when the over-haul is complete. This will include a whole new payment system for ordering from us. We WILL be making sure that a deposit system is used from now on, alongside the current system for armies and a new system of ordering will be arranged for the individual items section.

That being done, let me once again apologise for any confusion this has caused and I hope I have answered all your questions! (got any more?..let me know)

I am very glad that this has come to my attention and I hope we can repair what damage may have been done to our name before it became too serious to repair. With this being our first foray into being "out there" beyond our local gaming groups this is quite obviously a serious issue for us. I am glad this has come to light so early so that we can adapt, evolve and better serve the community! We are a crew of driven artists and we will do everything we can to be worthy of earning your trust.

If there are any further concerns please feel free to contact us here, or via email at help@bigbosspainting.co.uk

I hope this has helped to ease your fears,

Regards

Steve

I have not used this service, but the Testimonials seem very sketchy. The grammar and style of writing of each of the reviews looks very much the same, the most notable mistake is the lowercase "i" on all of the testimonials except at the start of the sentence.

Okay Steve, Dakka is a good site and reputation is all. Coming on here and posting one single post laying out your Modus Operandi is great, however actions and results speak louder than words. But be aware that generated good commission work will generate a positive response from the community, the opposite equally applies. Good luck, but don't be offended on a free speaking forum if people don't say nice things though.

No.

He just said that this is his full time job. If you're running your own business as a full time job, you need to be on the ball, and this guy isn't. His explanation shows that pretty much every aspect of operations they've tried so far was a mistake, which shows the business plan itself wasn't properly thought out and they certainly weren't ready to 'go live.' If BBP wants to keep this as his full time job, he's going to have to turn all that stuff around and fast.

Hey folks,

The website is coming down today to implement a total over-haul. We want it to be as clear as possible as to what we offer and our methodology.

And now time to chat a little more

Firstly, mwnciboo....thank you for your input brother, we value it immensely.

Secondly, Bookwreck, while BBP is MY full time job, other members of the team still have full time jobs. BBP became my full time job after many years of trying to juggle a desk job, my hobby and my commitments to the team. In the end I quit my desk job and have spent the last four years focusing on BBP within our local gaming communities and social groups. That being said, BBP has NEVER been web-based before in its life, this is new to us so mistakes with the site have occurred, thanks in no small part to the feedback from the folks here the mistakes are now being fixed.

I personally have given a total of 7 years of my life to BBP and I am not willing to let it fail, for myself and for the rest of the team. Our work ethic has always been to produce high quality professional work and we want to get that across in our site and our mission briefing. The people who we have known and worked with for so long have built faith in us and now its time for us to push ourselves and prove to the world that faith well earned

Finally....

Lovepug13, thank you brother. We wont let you down.

As i said above, the site comes down today and will remain down until the updates are in place. Expect a announcement in dedicated thread as soon as we return live. Until then, its a pleasure talking to you, and if you want to talk to us send us a PM here or email us direct at help@bigbosspainting.co.uk
