Hey, I was browsing the forums, reading up on tactics and things like that because I'm about to start building my first WH40k army.

I plan on going Tyranids. I don't know how strong they are compared to the others, but I like their models the best.

I noticed there were a few threads mentioning an upcoming 6th edition. Would it be advisable to wait untill 6th is out before starting to collect my army? Does the game change much with each new edition?

Tyranids are hard to utilize well.

There are many 'build' options possible - you could check out the 3++ blog for examples and a break down review of each unit.

The game does, the models don't. Start picking up some cool looking bugs, and wait for 6th ed for the rulebook.

Thanks. I'm currently browsing ebay for cheap deals to get me started (preferrably assembled, but unpainted). I'm not sure what points people play or where people play in my area (western part of NC), so it might just be me and a friend of mine for now. I figured painting some bugs might be a good artistic outlet, but I've never tried it before.

From what I've read there's two bugs I want to pick up for sure because they look fun. Tervigons, because spawning more units seems handy/fun. Also a Trygon just because I like the idea of
the big burrowing monster. I was thinking Mawloc at first, but Trygon pop'd up in alota list I looked at and I didn't realy see anyone recommending the Mawloc.

I picked up the WH40k starter painting kit (well it's in the mail anyways) which comes w/ 5 marines I think, so that will give me something to practice on before I get some bugs.

Oh and good call, I'll start getting bugs, but hold off untill the new codex comes in.

People say that the current tyranid codex is pants, but I like to disagree an multiple occasions my CSM have been crushed by the genestealers...

Also trygons= awesome have 3 and trygons are like queen aliens (spewing out stuff) and you can take them as troops AND H.Q's (thats if you want to go heavy on them).

I'm also looking at starting nids, because the models look amazing

6th ed might change the meta so they might become half decent but at the end of the day, rules change, models dont, pick the army you want based on the models you like

not sure rules wise (no codex yet/own outdated copy) but heres what i have:
tervigon
tyranid prime
x7 warriors
x3 raveners
x19 gargoyles
x30 gaunts- x12 w/ spinefists
trygon prime
x3 fexe's
x2 lictors
and a large swarm of rippers......again prob not much help but also i like/liked the 'Nid monsters so i bought a bunch but never got round to playing or painting them
