Ok, so I want to preface this by saying that I am completely new to 40K tabletop. My friend and I are both getting into the game at the same time, he is going to be playing space marine, and I am going to be playing eldar. We've decided to both build 500 point armies to start learning the game and rules with. I know so far that his army is going to consist of 1 librarian, and 10 tactical marines, here is what I've put together to try to counter him. All constructive criticisms are welcome, but please be gentle =)

1 Eldar Farseer - Runes of Warding, Spirit Stones, Doom, Fortune, Guide : 165 pts

9 Dire Avengers : 108 pts

5 Pathfinders : 120 pts

10 Guardians - Eldar Missile Launcher : 100 pts

Im also considering switching the EML to a scatter laser in the event that he doesn't field any transports with his army. Anyway, please let me know what you all think.

Well I dont know much about Eldar, but I believe this is ok.
I believe Guardians are really bad tho, so maybe another squad of Dire avengers.

I would recommend against marines to have a ten man dire avenger squad with bladestorm. Pathfinders are a bit over expensive for the size of game, I would reduce them to normal rangers.
A major recommendation for later on against marines is fire dragons.
Good choice on the runes of warding, though I would only give your farseer doom and guide and take out fortune.

Ok, I've dropped my Farseer's Fortune ability, downgraded the pathfinders to rangers, and added an Exarch with Bladestorm to my avengers.
Would it be worth it to swap the EML with a scatter laser, giving me enough points to add a warlock to my guardian squad? Thanks for the input.

*edit*
I just realized that even if I bought a warlock, I wouldnt have enough points left to purchase a power for him.

Executing Exarch

The Twilight Zone

Your EML is your ONLY anti tank. Hope to god he is not a jerk and goes out and gets a land raider...

Even against a rhino or razorback, you are hoping a single guided missile shot will save the day.

As far as killing infantry goes, you should absolutely murder them.

If you are only running 9 avengers(including the exarch), 5 rangers, the guide+doom seer with warding and stones and the guardians, you could add a warlock with embolden to the guardians.

Run the farseer with this unit to guide their crappy BS3. Also, embolden lets you re roll psychic tests as well as keep them on the table.

The most important rule of 40K-Page XVII of the 6th edition rulebook, the figure at the top right of the page. "Shake hands with your opponent and thank them for a good battle and fun experience." Then go out for a beer.

I would leave the eldar missile launcher, the extra anti-tank and anti-infantry make it definitely worth it.

Well, I'd go for a mech army:

Farseer w/ doom - 80

7 Dire Avengers - 84
Serpent w/ stones, scatterlaser - 125

7 Dire Avengers - 84
Serpent w/ stones, scatterlaser - 125

At this pt level, the Serpents are very hard to take down.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
How about this:

Farseer w/ doom - 80

5 Dire Avengers - 60
Serpent w/ stones, shuricannon - 110

5 Dire Avengers - 60
Serpent w/ stones, shuricannon - 110

2 Warwalkers w/ shuricannons - 80
