So, I noticed some people sharing memories and hopes over in the Planetside 2 thread and recalled a project currently in the works that might be of interest to some. It has switched from alpha to beta just now.
Heroes & Generals is a browser-based WW2 MMO that combines elements of 2D map-based strategic warfare and 3D FPS, made by the Danish studio Reto-Moto. The Generals will move around their units on a strategic map of Europe, attempting to outmaneuver the opposing force to bring their troops into position for a new attack, reinforce an ongoing battle, or prepare for a defense. The ultimate goal is the enemy capital - either Berlin (for the US Army) or London (for the German Wehrmacht). The battles themselves are fought over in a 3D environment, which is where the Heroes come into play. In this stage, the game feels a lot like Battlefield in that it uses spawn tickets and capture-point objectives. The number of tickets and selection of troop types, however, are determined by whatever forces the Generals have committed to the battle - and any casualties in an ongoing 3D battle are instantly reflected on the 2D strategic map.
Personally, I thought this combination of strategy and shooter elements is pretty novel, which is why I'd very much like to see what becomes of this game once it leaves beta stage. The developers have already announced plans for new maps and possibly new factions (possibly expanding the theatre of war right up to the Pacific). Graphics feel very oldschool BF1942 at this point, though I have to say I'm impressed that this stuff runs in a browser.
I've just gotten an e-mail asking to promote the game a little because they are looking to let new beta players in, so if you're interested:
