Hey guys, I was looking into the steam workshop to try to make some TF2 items. I would like to practice on something cheap/ or free until I can get the hang of CAD modeling so I can work up to doing
TF2 items. Any suggestions? Also, has anyone ever used the Wings3D program? That's the free one Valve suggests.

Thanks.

Blender. It's about the most powerful free 3d modeling software out there that I know of, and it comes with (or you can download) the capability to convert to pretty much any other 3d format. I used it for my Elder Scrolls modding.

Is it open source? I use Sketuchup for messing around, but it is quite limited.

Yep, completely free. Can do all kinds of things with it. I've been interested in it for a while but haven't got round to playing with it yet.
