Just wondering if anyone else is interested in this? I surely am.

Anyway, beta sign up is active.

Now all we need is a new Mechcommander game and I'm truly happy.

Signed up! From what I can tell it's basically Battletech, but with fancy graphics and playable online?

It's a browser game, asynchrous gameplay, so you can do multiple matches at the same time.

Also, every round get's played out as a little cinimatic. When the game finishes, all these are pasted together so you actually see the game as a full round of combat.

Oooh. I think I'll give this a try!

How does "Commander Name" work out? I realize it's a very minor point, but I'd like to know if I should register as my MW character's first name, last name, or first+last name (with spaces removed).

In short: How does the game refer to the name you're putting in? Is it just some nickname, or does it show up with a rank/title, etc?

Nickname most likely.

Looking forward to this, but unfortunately no Caln or Wraiths. But I imagine an expansion can easily accommodate this.

This game could be great and I agree with the OP a new Mech Commander game would be great as well.

I've been in the beta for sometime but have spent little time playing. The game isn't bad the browsers interface was just wonky. Might need to load it up again as it was quite some time ago that I last loaded it up.

I'm surprised this game doesn't have more interest, I thought it would be fairly popular.

Mhmm. I was a bit disappointed by the visuals (a tad too colourful, and the 'Mechs don't look "industrial" enough if that makes any sense) and that, from the few games I played, it seems very focused on "cards", a concept to which I seem allergic to.

I was hoping for a more straightforward conversion of the tabletop with a MechCommander-inspired economy. I think they actually got the "battles" part right, but all the trappings just don't feel very captivating to me. I'm sure someone who likes TCG would have more fun with it, though.

I like TCG's but I still don't like the card part of that game... it makes customization of mechs a hassle and a lot of the stats are straight up useless. (this mech gets +x% dmg with weapons from Y, mech has no slots for any of these weapons.)

I'm personally wary of its closed beta status. I'm not sure how much discussion is allowed, so I tend to simply recommend it and move on.

The frequent wipes also make it difficult to get a feel for the game at this point.

At this point, I believe it is a 20 dollar buy in, which will get you unique cards and a chunk of in-game currency down the road. You have optional even higher tiers in their 7th Commando program.

It is already really good, and getting noticeably better every patch. I am pleased with the money I spent on it.

Battletech is set in the 31st century. Mankind has spread to the stars, using the invention of Kearny-Fuchida drives and so-called JumpShips to traverse the vastness of space by folding it. Long-settled worlds pushing for independence, costly military campaigns, and an eventual withdrawal of the Terran Alliance had left the majority of colonies unprotected and left fending for themselves.

Over the following centuries, a number of factions of varying sizes has emerged, each laying claim over their region of space, and sometimes far beyond. Following the dissolution of the Star League - an attempt to ensure peace between the newly emerged noble houses - a series of four catastrophic interstellar wars has plunged the human worlds into a state of recession, with much industrial capacity and scientific knowledge lost to localised fighting, indiscriminate orbital bombardment and weapons of mass destruction.

The majority of the Star League's peacekeeping forces have departed human space, preferring exile in the unknown regions to involvement in the self-destructive rivalries between the great galactic powers. Meanwhile, the Star League's communications ministry has transformed into ComStar, a quasi-religious order sworn to preserving mankind's knowledge, maintaining their sovereignty by neutrally offering anyone that can pay their fees access to its monopolistic grid of HyperPulse-Generators, the only alternative to slow courier ships. Shrouded in trappings of superstition and conservative traditionalism, ComStar continues to work from the shadows, influencing the politics of the noble houses in an effort to pursue its mysterious agenda.

The major factions of the Inner Sphere are:
- House Davion, of the Federated Suns (French-UK amalgamation, professional soldiers)
- House Kurita, of the Draconis Combine (Feudal era Japan, Bushido and Samurai with Arab minority)
- House Liao, of the Capellan Confederation (Chinese collective, with Russian influences)
- House Marik, of the Free Worlds League (colourful collection of states, strong European, American, Indian influences)
- House Steiner, of the Lyran Commonwealth (German-UK amalgamation, economic powerhouse)

Depending on the era, however, there are more factions, and others may merge or disappear. Unlike 40k, Battletech is an ever-evolving setting that featured major changes to the politics of the Inner Sphere, from the marriage between Houses Davion and Steiner (creating the Federated Commonwealth) to the so-called Clan Invasion (conquering large swathes of the settled territories) to the horrific devastation that was the Jihad and the resulting Dark Age, out of which the Republic of the Sphere was born, centered on a reclaimed Terra and representing a shining beacon of hope amidst a galaxy that still suffering from loss and fear ... at least for a time.

Further details about human history, the different factions and the workings of a BattleMech are available in the free BattleTech Universe Guide.

Oh, and MechWarriors are those elite pilots of BattleMechs, the multiton bipedal behemoths that are the kings of the battlefield. It's the same setting, but in video games it is better known as MechWarrior, whilst BattleTech usually refers to the tabletop or the novels.

As usual with large, established sci-fi franchises, there are some similarities to other settings (for example you could say ComStar = Adeptus Mechanicus), but no straight copies of anything. It ties together nicely, and is almost unique in that there are no intelligent alien lifeforms anywhere, just humans fighting humans, which has lead to a strong focus on political rivalries and personal vendettas, especially as almost any faction, or at least its citizens and soldiers, is presented as equally likeable, though just like in real life there are notable differences between the various leaders succeeding one another, in turn influencing how their faction behaves and is perceived.

Oh, there's also no such thing as artificial gravity or energy shields in this setting. In spite of a lot of high tech, everything is fairly "industrial" and appears almost gritty and, or so I feel, more realistic due to this.

The setting also has a distinctive "80s sci-fi feel" to it when it comes to certain visual designs, which I rather like.

As a whole, the tabletop franchise is rather large and has, over the decades of its existence, spawned countless novels, RPGs, computer games, and even the cartoon series featured at the start of this post. It has evolved into a very complex setting with lots of detail and (vulnerable, human) characters, and unlike 40k actually has an official canon policy and an ever-evolving setting.

I can only recommend taking a look at it. After having started to play MWO, I read up on the background and ... well, what can I say, got hooked on the novels, purchased the TT rulebooks, the RPG, etc.
