Ok so GW price gouging has driven me over the edge. I;ve always admired corvus bellis models and after checking out a few vids i like the background and the rules system.

Im thinking about grabbing the Yu jing Imperial Service pack as a starter and am after some ideas to complement it...

I have a load of favourites already but i pick what i like the look of and not what will always work best in a game. (im a painter first gamer second)

So open to suggestions... looking for about 4-5 models to add onto the starter...

You're pretty much sorted. Infinity is a much better balanced game than WH40K or WHFB - it's not about which models you have, it's about how you use them. You can most certainly choose models based on what looks good and end up with an entirely usable and competitive force at the end of it.

I tend to recommend using action movie special forces squads as a rough guideline - these squads will usually include some combination of the leader, heavy weapons guy, sniper, CQB guy, sneaky scout, tech guy, some all-round badasses, the really tough guy built like the back end of a tank, etc, etc. Just think in that same kind of "all round" approach and you'll get something that works.

The only things that you really need to remember are:
- AVA is the ultimate limit of how many of a single type of model you can have in a force. If you're looking at playing Imperial Service*, this is a Sectorial list (i.e. sub faction) and therefore has different AVA values.
- SWC limits how many special weapons you can use in a force. You can spend up to 1 SWC for each 50 points of game.
- One model has to be able to be the Lieutenant. Which models can be the Lt is given in the army lists. If you're buying a starter though, these will always include at least one valid Lt choice.
- If you want remotes (other than Servant or Synchronised remotes), you need a hacker or a TAG in the force.

*Sectorials are not normally recommended for starting players though, as they often need to use more complicated rules and advanced tactics. However, the models can all be used in the general Yu Jing list (although Celestial Guard are only AVA 2 in regular Yu Jing, so you would have a spare).

Of course, the other thing to say is that it's best to start slowly with Infinity. Some people charge in and get themselves overwhelmed. So it's best to run a few simple proxy games with just 3 or 4 simple models to get a grip on the basics first. (Make sure you use plenty of terrain!)

If I was going to buy yu Jung, I'd get ninjas, cause, well they're ninjas!

Can't really say anything that Marco already hasn't. It's a great game, far better than 40k.

One other thing to add - as far as sampling the game, Corvus Belli recently released an updated "Quick Start Rules" pack. It's slightly simplified, but it does mean you don't have to try and swallow an entire rulebook to just try the basics.

It can be found on the official site's downloads section.

Excellent, cheers for that, relived to see i will mostly have my pick of the many funky models i've been drooling over for the last few hours. I'll bear the SW and AVA limitations in mind. I'll be trying to check out a few sample lists but with any luck ill be able to build a nice compact characterful force that i can build on later. Even if i have to proxy the IS as something simpler to use for a while.

and Cave Dweller.. remember, ninjas don't exist ; )

As long as you don't go overboard with TO or Drop troopers so you have enough orders.

And welcome to the glorious empire, Yu Jing!

A good compliment would be the Kuang Shi, Wu Ming, and maybe a few more Celestial Guard. If you want to do ISS they have an AVA of total.
