So on thinking about whether I should start up a new crew or continue on further with the Kirai one I started with I've been thinking about just how I should go about with my list. Mostly been thinking about if I should run more Gaki or not, something to give me a good foothold to get a nice flow of Seishin going.

Currently I run, from memory
Kirai
Spirit of Lost Love
Datsue-Ba
5 seishin
and I think two Onryo or Gaki depending on how it goes.

Generally play at about the 30ss level, it works somewhat but I can sort of see the issues in it. The Seishin are important, but I'm not sure if I should go with a flat out five or cut them down to just three. There's also a league starting up here which I believe is at the 35ss level which would thankfully give me more room, but it's what got me thinking about it in the first place. At three points each it sort of feels like I should probably end up taking more of them to start up with and sort of strike early and hard with Datsue-Ba in hopes of making more or maybe Onryo instead. At the moment though I only have the following models for the list:

Kirai, Spirit of Lost Love, Datsue-Ba, five Seishin, two Onryo, two Gaki, Ikiryo and a Shikome. Looking around what I guess I'd pick up is another Shikome, Gaki, Onryo, Jack Daw, Kira Avatar or Jaakuna Ubume (no idea what it has, but it's an interesting model which at first I had throught was a Kirai alt). However I was thinking of buying something for them when I go to play tomorrow (not that I'm demanding instant advice on this, there seems to be little you can go wrong with when it comes to buying summonable minions ).

So any thoughts on starting with a swarm of Gaki?

I wouldn't make Gaki swarm an auto list as it will not do well against AoE dealers like Criid, Lilith, Leviticus, etc. But that is the beauty of Kirai, you can basically switch her crew on the fly with evolve spirit.

If you are considering Jack, I highly, highly recommend him. He is nothing but pure frustration for your opponent... to the point that people will often give up after turn 2. He won't kill much, but he will completely shut down nearly any model that you get him into melee range with, and his no cheating aura can be insanely brutal when paired with other models (or himself) that have pulse/aura effects that require simple duels. Those Wp/Df -> 11 suddenly become dangerous for many models.

I guess that's the nice thing about Kirai, it's almost like several crews in one. Though I suppose I'd still want to find a decent base for it. Probably was on the right path with the Seishin and Datsue-ba, but it was what else I guess that I was getting stumped on. Daw would probably fill out those points though.

By the way is Ubume any good? Looking at the model I think I'll probably end up getting it eventually anyway.

I haven't tried or played against Ubume, but just reading her abilities makes her sound like a great distraction/mud pit unit. She essentially chooses a target or two to follow her all over the board with little choice of doing anything else.

Might have to get her and mess around to see for myself then. With the mobility of the crew already it sounds like it could help out a bit. Maybe something like drag them in close to something they don't want to be near, then keep them there.
