I hate you guys, you with your interesting and inspiring threads singing the praises of Infinity...

I was able to resist the call of fantastic minis and terrain for a while, but no longer

I'm going to have to take the plunge and get some, I've put it off for too long, curse you and your well organised sub-forum, all your fantastic model and terrain threads

So, with the cursing and the hatred out of the way, I've been looking on the Infinity website and I've fallen in love with the Ariadna faction. Low tech but reliable gear, very "near future/semi modern" theme, and the models are just top-notch I'm going to have to get some... I've been wanting to read more on the background fluff but I can't find much in my perusals of the interwebz. I'm guessing most of the fluff is contained within the rulebooks?

Models wise, I really like alot of the Ariadna sculpts, but I really don't know which ones to get. My favourites so far are in the spoiler below

Spoiler:

They're some that immediately stick out as my favourites, amongst others. So you guys in the know, would these been a half-decent selection for a starter army? Bearing in mind I have absolutely no clue whatsoever when it comes to the rules

So there you have it.
Another convert.

I hope you're happy

Looking at them in the army builder, seems pretty solid. Scout and SAS provide you with some nasty Camouflage. Dozer is a neat support trooper/engineer, and can also unlock the Traktor Mul artillery remote if you're so inclined. Irmandinhos: Plucky, aggressive little buggers with a random chance of getting awesome gear.

Should be about ~120ish points depending on loadout. Add in maybe the Line Kazak 3-pack and you've got something around 150 points, a good level to learn the game.

I've made a quick army list with the miniatures you've chosen and adding a few more to reach the 10 men combat group.

That would be a nice list ...bobbatfet with 2 HMGs, and autocannon, and some camo. Surely a force that would bring a fight.

There might be just one problem though as the LT. can easily be pointed out...as he is the only viable Lt. I believe. So the opponent will know where to send his heavy hitters or assassination dedicated troops.

Id recommend just a 150 force with some Line Kazaks as this will give you back to back quick but brutal games...allowing the player to enjoy those face to face rolls, firefights, and bullet dodging without too much rules consultation. Then the fun only adds up...when he gets the hang of the rules and adds up some specialized troops to open more cans of whoop@$$.

(looking at posted pics) those models do look nice though and would definitely be excellent reinforcements.

At first I wouldn't worry about Lt. because if you and your opponent is new it's going to take time to even recognize what is what.

I can't sing the praises of starting with a starter pack enough. Let's be honest here - eventually, you're going to own all of Ariadna. The starter packs come with a good variety of models, which will come in handy as you learn the game. Trust me - in Infinity, you really don't know what's going to work for you until you've tried it.

My P&M blog - in which I chronicle the transformation of a battered windfall of models into an awesome addition to my Blood Angels force (hopefully) - can be found here: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/431820.page.

Thanks for the tips everyone, thanks especially to BobbaFett for the list

The problem with the main starter pack, the models aren't really my favourites, although I have to say I am a fan of the models in this pack;

Would this be a good starter? Along with the SAS guys and the Engineer? I can ditch the Irmandinhos and the Scout for now (And probably would if I was to get the pack above) That would be enough models for now I think.

I'm going to order the rulebooks and some models, hopefully tonight.

Thanks CDK, that's settled. One of those packs, 2 SAS guys and an Engineer and I'll be set I think.

I'll order the stuff tonight.

When it comes to fluff, is the only source available the rulebooks?

Solid set. You'll need to proxy one of the Metros as something else, as they have an Availability of 2 in vanilla Ariadna. You can paint one up in funky camouflage, for a neat Chausseur proxy, or keep it as is if/when you expend to the Merovingian (FRRM) sectorial for Ariadna.

Here's a sample 150 list you can make with that force that should be a nice balanced place to start. The Zouave's mechanized deployment puts you up front, backed up by SAS, with a Para-Commando coming in on one flank. The Metros hang back with the Moblot Lieutenant, providing orders and covering fire, and acts a reserve for wherever you need them. It's over by 1 point, shouldn't be a biggie, but you can downgrade the Boarding Shotgun SAS into one carrying a Rifle or Chain Rifle.

EDIT:
For fluff, yeah, as far as I know, they're the main source of fluff at the moment, though you can pick up interesting bits about the factions from the unit writeups in the Miniatures gallery. I'll say that the hardback rulebooks are pricey, so you might want to skip over them at first if you're on a budget, but they're well worth it for an eventual purchase. Lots of fluff and art, and it's always nice to have the rules in paper form for table reference.

Thanks phelanw0lf!

There's 2 rulebooks right? The original and an expansion? I'll stick with the original one and the models for now and get the other later.

Thanks for the help everyone, I can't wait to get home and order this stuff

I was aiming for the original rulebook and then the expansion. I ordered both books but had only received the expansion. Then I realised the expansion seems more like the rule book part 2 =P
Looking at all the awesome minis, I don't feel like I could play without the new units/equipment =P
But anyway, it's not as if it's hard to find the rules online =P

I'm after the fluff more so than the rules, but obviously if I'm going to be playing I'll need them too

Still haven't been through the fluff of both books. But by the way it looks, there is less fluff in the expansion book but the quality is better.
Both books are actually incredible =)

On the infinity site you can read the fluff on individual troops. That's a good start.

For example

Way ahead of you CDK, I was reading through them in work

I'm after a more general background overview, of which I assume there is one in the book.

EDIT: Just ordered the stuff Can't wait till it arrives now...
