Myself and a few of my friends are about to start playing soon(ish) and are working on the background lore for our conflict- Basically its an agri-world built over a slumbering tomb world. A species of trees that has evolved to feed on the tomb's power grid had screwed over the Necron's awakening (we're sculpting the trees out of wine bottle caps) so the Necrons have only now slowly begun to awaken because the oblivious farmers above started chopping them down. The Tau are coming in force to protect this marvelous and unique species of plants and perhaps to expand their sphere of influence over this world, the
IG is coming in force to stop them and a Nid splinter fleet is already at the edge of the system coming to feed.
In short, it's going to get messy.
At any rate, here's the backstory for my Necron dynasty:
Before the long sleep the Storekh dynasty was one of the smaller ones, populating but a handful of tombworlds across their sector of space. Despite their size the Storekh dynasty possessed vast material resources thanks to the disproportionate amount of mineral deposits throughout their territory. Normally, this would've led to great expansion and the construction of many fine tombworlds, but alas this wealth was offset by the vanity of the Dynasty's Phaeron, Kohrtekh, and his obsession with technological achievement.
Instead of using his vast resources to expand, Kohrtekh instead used them to draw ever more Crypteks into his service and even more to sate his vain need to "equal" those dynasties that considered themselves his betters, creating an ever growing gallery of arcane contraptions each meant to equal theirs or mimic some enviable capability through technological means.
Had these devices been put to good use they may have allowed the Storekh dynasty to rise to a higher standing in the echelons of the Necron nobility, but alas the Phaeron was loathe to allow any but himself access to his prized collection.
In his endless drive for technological achievement Kohrtekh had built himself a magnificent crown world in the bowels of the planet Storekhmokh, but the rest of his dynasty suffered from severe neglect. When the command to prepare for the long sleep came is was apparent that many of the tombs under his rule could not be properly prepared for it, and so the Phaeron had his Crypteks prepare his crown world to house all the populace of his empire that could not be reliably entombed in their own worlds, creating great hyperspace holding chambers where they could slumber as ordered and leaving little more than large outposts where the rest of his tombs await.
However, fate did not smile upon the Storekh dynasty- the unparalleled construction of Skorekhmokh and the great stores of arcane technologies stored within had an unexpected side effect on the ecosystem above, giving birth to a strange species of tree like plants that latched on to the topmost nodes of the tombworld's power grids and fed on their eldrich energies.
Over the eons this drain forced the tomb to slowly shut down system after system, eventually even cutting off connection to the great hyperspace holds to preserve core reanimation capabilities.
Over 65 million years after the Storekh dynasty had begun their long sleep their tomb mind had finally seen fit to awaken them, and things are not as they should be. Kohrtekh had awoken to find the vast majority of his legions still aslumber, many beyond his reach in their hyperspace prison, an impudent colony of primitives tilling the earth of his world, no less than three separate forces of organics moving through the void to land and do battle on HIS crown tomb and those WRETCHED TREES still draining power from his systems.
Kohrtekh has awoken, and with his rude awakening came a new drive to replace his old- these filthy organics mush be CLEANSED!
