http://www.warlordgames.com/22992/pre-order-bolt-action-rulebook-and-free-miniature/

The release date for the Bolt Action rulebook is set. Now you can place your pre-order for this superb rulebook and also ensure you receive a rather special miniature for free. Take a gulp of your canteen, soldier and read your orders…

Written by veteran game designers Alessio Cavatore and Rick Priestley, Bolt Action provides all the rules needed to bring the great battles of World War II to your tabletop. Using miniature soldiers, tanks and terrain, you can fight battles in the shattered towns of occupied France, the barren deserts of North Africa, and even the sweltering jungles of the Pacific.

Players get to decide which of the major or minor World War II powers they would like to represent, and then construct their armies from the lists provided. Army options are almost limitless, allowing you to build the kind of army that most appeals to your style of play. The choice is yours.

Created as a joint project between Warlord Games and Osprey Publishing, the leading independent military history publisher, Bolt Action is sure to be the most popular new wargame on the market.

I'm really interested in this game. I'm a little turned off by the fact that the game will need army books, though. I was hoping for an experienced based campaign system similar to mordeim or necromunda but it doesn't look like it has it. But I might preorder it seeing has how I've $75 by not buying the 40k 6th Ed. rule book.

I dunno exactly, but I would expect to see some similar qualities to that of Black Powder, Hail Caesar, and Pike and Shot. Though obviously less rigid formations

Why would you expect it to be like those other games these guys have shown that every time the design a new game its a new game. Ricks stamp on this project should not be ignored look what he did with Dust.

Because my one experience with Alessio is the two games he wrote for Mantic? I happen to like KOW and Warpath, which both play very similarly, and if Bolt Action does as well that would sell me on it.

Haven't played Dust either, I'm not interested in the board game version and I keep hearing the Tactics version has balancing issues.

I think you are confusing Rick with Andy Chambers there.

This looks interesting, but I'm in no rush. I might wait for the "big box" version of it with a pile of Germans and (I presume) Brits.

First army book for Bolt Action has been announced: http://www.warlordgames.com/23414/more-bolt-action-pre-order-details/

The first supplement for Bolt Action covers the Armies of Germany. Afrika Korps, Blitzkrieg forces, Waffen-SS, Fallschirmjager, etc are all covered in this lovely book. You can see the first look at the supplement cover below, illustrated expertly by Peter Dennis.

We’ll have pre-order details for you in a future newsletter. Suffice to say that, as with the rulebook, we’ll be giving away free miniature when you buy Armies of Germany from us – the one and only Otto Skorzeny, one of the driving forces behind German special forces and many daring raids. The model is currently being sculpted by Paul Hicks so keep an eye on our weekly newsletter for it…

Speaking of free miniatures we plan to follow this theme with the rest of the Bolt Action supplements. For example, we’ll have the US Marine Corp’s ‘Chesty’ Puller for the Armies of America supplement. You’ll only be able to get your hands on these superb character models by purchasing these titles from us here at Warlord Games. As we get nearer to publishing dates we’ll bring you all the news and pre-order info – stay tuned!

Yay.. we're getting that war criminal Skorzeny with this one.

It does not play like KoW or Warpath. I got the rules at Historicon. BA uses a modified IGUG mechanic ie each player gets a number of orders dice (6 types of actions...move, assault, shoot, rally, ambush/over-watch, and take cover) based on number of units. All the orders dice are in a cup and you draw a die one at a time. The player decides which unit to activate and decides which order to assign to that unit. Unit plays that order then next die is drawn.

Casualties are removed.

It's a skirmish game (designed for 30-50 models per side - think WM/H than GW 40k...u can play more too) based on reinforced platoons where individual models can be geared differently. The gear is simple weapon loadouts differences.

Play mechanics are clear and simple...similar to common existing rulesets. The fun is how you coordinate your forces.

The army build is a point system with a recommended 1000 pts. So what is 1k look like?

You build reinforced platoons and can have as many of those you want. Each The reinforced platoon requires a hq (an officer plus you can add other men) and two squads (minimum per squad is 5 man fireteam and then you build that out in both numbers and gear based on historical content)...then you add support units (any or all but all are 0-1). Support is a tank, a gun, a atr, more squads (0-3), etc.

Ft (half squads) cost 30-80 points based on quality and gear. HQs can be 30-125 in a simsr manner. Tanks run 200-300, AGs/TDs 150-250, guns 50-150, etc.

Only played a few small learning games, but liking the pacing (fast), clear rules and feel. The RIGUG keeps me engaged rather than the tug of war with games where you take your turn and I take mine.

Sorry changed above...it was for random. I was trying to convey it's not a pure IGUG system.

Depending on the which sides order die is drawn, you could activate consecutively without your opponent activating for a number of draws. Once all order dice are drawn, you fill the cup back up.

Ahhhh, thanks! Certainly looking forward to the rules and giving them a go myself, I've got a box of Brits and Krauts each from Warlord, should be enough to get me going right?

Yes. The boxes will give you the hq and squads (and some infantry support teams). The suggested first purchases I read on the bolt action forums is a box of infantry (especially if plastic as they are more configurable than the metal) and a vehicle. That should be between 400 to 700 points dependent on how you gear and the type of vehicle
