So I'm new around here, and for all intents and purposes I'm very new at the whole hobby as well. I've thrown all sense out the window recently and got hold of a bunch of stuff to try and start up my first army.
This thread is here so I can keep a track of what I'm doing and have done, and so that I can ask for help and advice as much as I can. I've only painted two or three models at the moment, so I'm gonna be needing it :p
Apologies in advance for any poor photos. I'm as bad with cameras as I am with paintbrushes.

First of all, this is the stuff I bought myself. I've got a full set of Citadel paints from when I was 13 or so that I've tried to salvage, but I needed to get pretty much everything else new.
I also freaked the hell out and got myself very overexcited when I saw my army come in. Looking forward to putting these lot together:

I sat myself down, and after a while I decided to go with a Thokt-ish colour scheme. Here's my test warrior:

My main concern about this one is how to make the grey on the weapon not look ABSOLUTELY FRICKING TERRIBLE. I'll be making another practice one I think to see if I can avoid using grey like that.
I'm looking for absolutely every piece of advice you could care to sling my way, whether it be about the colour scheme, painting technique or constructing the thing, so would be grateful for any input.

Have you thought about painting the weapon white and then giving it a few black washes?

Other than that, that's quite a nice scheme, I especially like the back of the skull, looks cool!

Just wondering how much you spent! Mainly on the tools rather than models.

Pretty big financial investment for a new hobby! The new necrons are cool though.

I'd say try some washes.

Thanks. I have a couple more test warriors around so I'll give that idea for the weapons a shot.

I think it was something in the vicinity of £50 for the tools etc and around £150 for the models. I got everything from totalwargamer.com during one of their weekend sales, so it was cheaper than it could have been. I've been loving it so far though so I think it was worth it.
