Try actually reading through the threads? Seriously, 5 minutes of effort, all it takes.

On another note depends what your after. Ship themed combat: head over to the spartan games forum. Weird west/steampunk skirmish games? Malifaux. Mecha? erm kinda limited in choice except for a few really rather bad homebrew games. Theres heavy gear and one other whos names escape me atm, but they apparently have quiet the learning curve for newbies.

Seriously a bit of input would be a huge help, most of the games are "different" in some way.

Look into Infinity. Check out the Infinity section of the Forums for more information.

Edit: Actually if you're looking for 'armies', Infinity might not be for you. Its a smaller skirmish type game.

Youv just described everything not made by GW well done

Infinity does have mecha, you can avoid them yourself, but your oponents wont, their pretty snazzy gamewise.

Malifaux, infinity, the mantic stuff, maybe look into some homebrew games?

Im really just using a coverall term, but basicaly generic (and often free) rulesets you can usualy easily tweak to any setting

And of course use any models you want for the most part.

The Battlefield

Tactical shooter gameplay with: 8 classes, 9 vehicle profiles, 35 loadouts, 9 core game modes [each with 4-8 variations], supports 2-8 players, complete QRS, and sports bonus modes [games within the game] featuring Zombies, Insurgents, and MERCs.

Like John, I'm a little biased in my recommendation...

Time to pitch Combat Storm!
So you're looking for 28mm realistic cheap? I've got just the game for you! Combat Storm is modern warfare gaming for almost dirt cheap. $100 gets two, count it 2, full armies that will last a lifetime and provide for hours of endless fun! The game uses plastic army men and plastic tanks. Strategy is the key to victory for luck will only take you so far before leaving your men on the receiving end of an AK47 round. All the missions are designed not around killing the enemy, but around completing certain objectives that can make a difference in a larger campaign if you choose to go that route. The game flows nicely with all the dice rolling for the GW fan to enjoy! DId I mention the price? Well it's really low for two people to play, and just about the same if not lower for more and more people that want to jump on.

I second Wastelands (by Dicehead). Great Post Apocalyptic skirmish campaign game. You can play several games in a night and it's nicely open for personal tweaking. There's also a couple of supplements on The Post Apoc Wargames forum for stuff like S.T.A.L.K.E.R and (I think) Waterworld. Also it's free.

Slottabases for the Slottabase God!

Daemon host - 2000
Death Guard & Iron Wraiths Chaos Space Marines - 1500 pts incl. mini's from my Daemon Host

Beastmen Warherd - between 1000-1250 points (depending on magic items etc.)

Necromunda/RT Genestealer Cult

Necromunda/RT Beastmen Cult
Old West Lawmen + Cowboys posses

VSF British

Hasslefree Mesaan Army (wip)

Various Post Apocalyptic minis and vehicles for Wasteland 3 Meltdown
