I was perusing the net for some ancient roman miniatures to use in Fantasy, when i found THIS

http://www.warlordgames.com/store/

I can tell you, after dealing with GW's crappy overpricing for as long as I can remember, my mouth dropped when I saw how unbelievably cheap these are. 30 miniatures for 17 pounds??? HELLS TO THE YES!

Take a unit of Empire state troops, for instance. For 10 guys you pay 27 pounds, which is 2.7 pounds per model. With the aforementioned box of Legionnaires, you pay 0.57 pounds per model. HELLS TO THE YES!

Now, scale-wise, the models are pretty close to Lord of the Rings. They are a little shorter than warhammer humans, and more delicate as well, but overall, the quality is quite exceptional and the romans were historically quite short anyway.

Needless to say, I acquired quite a few models from them. They arrived a mere week later (as opposed to the months I have waited for other online orders) and I am painting some Vikings as we speak. I am quite the satisfied customer, and me and my brother shall soon be battling armies of Romans and Celts supplemented with Warhammer monsters.

I am telling you all this becasue as far as i know, Warlord Games is relatively new to the field. They have several former GW staff-members working for them, designing their own ruleset to use the ancient line of models with, and the range is constantly expanding. I am a happy customer who wants to spread the word and let people know about Warlord Games, so that they can enjoy all the prosperity and success that their service promises as soon as possible

...and so that they can make me more Romans. Huzzah!

Huh, their stuff usually takes well over a month to reach me. But I like their stuff, goes excellently with Crooked Dice minis and those done by Hasslefree.

Warlord has been around for some time now and is run by Paul Sawyer, whom some might remember as "Fat Bloke" from back when White Dwarf was still good.

Yes Warlord Games are absolutly superb I will agree with you on. I stubbeld upon them while looking for alternative Empire moddels, and was hooked from then.
After that I hav completed three armies from them, a Pinke & Shot Parlamentarian army, a highlander army and a early roman legion

I wouldnt exactly say Warlord is "new to the field". They've been in business for quite some time now. A good 5 or so years I think. Not to mention their capacity for acquiring smaller lines (Bolt Action and their non Macedonian Greeks for instance)

Still very nice folk. One of the few companies daring to make plastic historicals

Still waiting for them to finally start doing those vehicle plastics that they talked about ages ago. Their resin vehicle kits are less than stellar IMHO.

Maybe Warlord needs to get on the KS train as well?

No bit that would have been a good one! It was a reference to his reign being refered to the red period because of the bright colours and general garishness of WD at the time. Don't worry all the best jokes require explaining.

Now then about the casual rascism what with through the L word in there, we find that gravely offensive clogboy.

Huh, when I think of the good old WD's I always think of blue, as my very first issue, 220, was blue.

Apologies, no harm meant and please, clogs are so passé, try bogdweller next time.

Just like Perry Miniatures, Victrix, Crusader Miniatures, Conquest Games, and Wargames Factory off the top of my head. There are a lot out there making plastic historicals, and more making metals that are just as cheap as the plastics.

I'd prefer a bit of garishness over what WD looks like now...I swear to god every single new issue I've seen this year has had a white cover, with just a little piece of art in the middle to hint at what it's about. Looks kinda boring.

I'm from the future. The future of space

Next week I'm going to be giving Warlord's new WW2 miniature rules a try (called Bolt Action and written by Rick Priestly). It's releasing later this month but a local guy got an advance copy. It looks to have my favorite thing of any miniature game-- the model count right in the sweet spot. About 30 or so miniatures and maybe a vehicle or two is a full game.

So what if I do something outlandish and do an all metal or resin army? What would a project like that cost for 40k? Don't even want to know!

For Bolt Action? Box of metal Soviet Infantry. Another smaller box of 9 infantry to get up to a full platoon (32 metal infantry). A platoon mortar team (3 metal crew + mortar). And say, an armoured car and a SU122M tracked assault gun. Total: $133.50 for an all metal army with resin vehicles.

Balance in pick up games? Two people, each with their own goals for the game, design half a board game on their own without knowing the layout of the board and hope it all works out. Good luck with that. The faster you can find like minded individuals who want the same things from the game as you, the better.

It really does highlight how much GW rips us off when you see how cheap plastic and metal figures can really be. So we know it isn't materials or the difficulty of making high-quality miniatures that drives up the price, it is corporate greed and stupidity.

It's quite shocking isn't it?

Artizan Designs Landsknecht: Metal 8 for £9.60 (£1.20 each)

Front Rank HYW Archers: Metal £1.15 each (or 24 for £26)

And back on topic:

Warlord Spartans: Plastic 40 (!) for £20 (50p each)

It's always nice (and a bit amusing) to see WHFB folks discover the wonder and wonderful pricing of historical miniatures.

Watch out though. First your grabbing some Perry infantry for your Empire army, the next thing you know you're buying non-GW orcs and other off-brand fantasy figs.

That way lies madness....

I'm from the future. The future of space

More and more of my gaming is becoming historical related. It's really refreshing to be able to get complete armies for both sides for less than half of a small GW army would be. It's even cheaper than things like Warmachine/Hordes.

I just started a 10mm Napoleonics project and it's giving me fond Warmaster memories from around 10 years ago. One of GW's best games ever-- now Rick Priestly is doing the rules design for Warlord Games. He worked on Hail Caesar, Black Powder and now Bolt Action.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Another thing I like about this stuff is that while a given manufacturer sells both rules and miniatures, there's no trademarks or copyrights on the uniforms of historical soldiers, so you can buy rules for quality and buy miniatures for quality without having the conflict of interest that comes when the rules are tied to specific stylized figures in order to sell them.

For example, if I like the Black Powder rules, I can use 10mm miniatures from Pendraken without any trouble. The rulebooks talk about other scales and figures and while they are presented alongside Warlords 28mm lines, they don't exclusively tie them to the miniatures line. The game needs to stand on its own merits and the miniatures need to stand on theirs.

Flames of War has tried to tie figures and rules together, but Plastic Soldier Company has done a great job of offering FoW players an alternative. As has Old Glory's 15mm WW2 line. Even the smaller Wargames Factory 15mm german miniatures sell quite well in the local shop to Flames of War players.
