Hello,

I am reporting in for duty. I am new to 40k, always had a fascination with modeling and war gamming since I was a child...just could never find anyone who shared in the interest. 40k, warhammer, flames of war...it's all good.

I picked up the newest edition of the 40k rule book, and I plan on reading through it to decide on which army to start working on.

I also plan on going to a couple hobby stores to see, if they do indeed host games, and watch a couple in progress.

If anyone is in the south eastern part of Wisconsin and want to take a new player under their wing, please shoot me a message.

I look forward to joining this community!

I like the look and finesse of elder and tau, however I am attracted by the all-roundness of the space marines.

I am most definitely open to suggestions and guidance.

If I wanted to collect and model two different army lines, to do a couple dry runs with…what would be a good point range? 250? 500?

I would be open to purchasing a starter box, however with the old one, Orcs don’t do much for me and with the new one coming out, Chaos doesn’t really excite me either.

Stay away from the Eldar starter box, that much I'd suggest. And generally 500 points is a good dry run, at least it was for myself. Orkz dont' really do it for myself either but being a Chaos fan I would, of course, suggest them. However, have you thought about Dark Eldar?

I have looked at the dark eldar, how differently do they play compared to other races?

From the podcasts and posts I have been reading and listening too, it seems like 6th edition necron flyer's have been cleaning up the playing field.

The 6th edition rulebooks I have is mighty large, it will take me sometime to get through all of it.

Welcome to Dakka, Curious Owl.
Generally speaking, I think you should go for an army that you like the look of.
I say this because I noticed that you mentioned your fascination with modeling before war gaming.
You are probably going to spend quite a lot of time painting and modeling those models, so it is important to choose an army which you find visually interesting.
I suggest taking another look at the Tau, since you mentioned an interest in them.
They are doing very well in this edition.
Having said that, Dark Eldar are pretty cool too.
So many choices. Have fun!

I have some large projects around the house and at work coming up, so it will be a couple months before I am “game ready”.

I think what I am going to do, is read through the entire rule book, read a couple 40k novels, wait for 6th edition codex’s of potential interesting factions come out, and then go from there.

I also plan on finding where the action happens around where I live. Visit a couple local gaming places and watch a few matches go down, asking players and shop owners what they field.

Last thing I want to do is start building an army that is already over saturated in my area.

Hi,
