I am preparing to start assembly and painting on my recent purchase of a rifle company. Are there any recommendations anyone has as far as the process or materials?
(i.e. paint the troops separate or types of flocking/basing to level out the height of the bases)

Thank you for any help.

There are a million ways to go about it.

You should scour the internet and looks for models that you like the LOOK of. Then find out the process they used.

Some people can glue their guys down to the base and still paint the infantry to a very high standard and some people paint them on popsicle sticks then when done glue them to the base etc....

To make the infantry appear to be level with the base, I used a pumic gel and smeared it around the base. It takes a few days to dry but Its hassle free and works fantastic for what I was trying to achieve,

Look for some FOW blogs.

Obviously YMMV - But I tend to paint in batches - I'll stick all the models I'll need for one base onto a bit of leftover 40K sprue (It's the only thing I really use it for, and I have tons of the stuff ) I'll paint all 4/5 at once, then stick them to the base. I'll then use a readymixed filler (available from most DIY stores here in the UK) to even out the base and get it roughly level. Once that dries (2-3 hours) I'll paint it Charadon Granite (the old foundation paint - not sure what the new equivalent is) Stipple/drybrush a few shades of brown, maybe stick a small rock to it etc. Then I'll put down a base of dark green flock, light green static grass then a few patches of yellow static grass, blended in with a little more green. Then I'll stick a few bits of clump foliage down and call it done

I glue them onto the base prior to painting myself. Many say that you should paint first, but I've never had any issue with doing it how I have.

As for basing, I have been using an acrylic modelling paste that I mix with some cheap brown acrylic paint to build up the base, then I put on some static grass and foliage for bushes. After that's done, I put a bit more of the straight paste on (as it dries opaque) for snow.

WWPD.net is recommended.

It’s also worth checking gaming forums at the flames of war and WWPD.net sites and looking in the painting sections. People will often have links to their blogs in their signatures.

Personally I put all infantry on the bases and then paint them. I don’t do anything fancy in regards to basing them I just spread a thinish coat of wall filler (cheap stuff from a pound shop/dollar store works fine) on the base and place the minis in it, no glue required. Ideally this should come up to the top of the miniatures base. Leave it 24 hours to fully dry and then sand the base. Generally the finer the sand the better for 15mm stuff. Pet store sand for bird cages works fine, or sand pit sand.

There is also some good stuff on FoW's website

but I personally prefer the wwpd way of basing FoW models.
