Hi there, Im just wondering what are the colours you guys used to paint German Infantry, especially uniforma and helmet. I personally used German fieldgrey for uniform and German grey for helmet and I think they look a bit odd.

That is traditionally the correct colour combo, though it does look 'off', perhaps due to endless war films with grey Nazis in Grey tanks?

"There's a time when the operation of the machine becomes so odious—makes you so sick at heart—that you can't take part. You can't even passively take part. And you've got to put your bodies upon the gears and upon the wheels, upon the levers, upon all the apparatus, and you've got to make it stop. And you've got to indicate to the people who run it, to the people who own it that unless you're free, the machine will be prevented from working at all" Mario Savio

That's the correct colour, the previous comment about grey movie Germans is spot on.

Personally mine are a hodge-podge mix of Feldgrau, winter/summer oakleaf and peadot to represent the determined but rather overworked and overwhelmed SS infantry. Yes, each infantryman takes forever to paint D:

I use GW colours, basecoat Adeptus Battlegrey, wash Badab Black, layer Adeptus Battlegrey, layer Codex Grey and another Badab Black wash. That does the fatigues, the helmets as above, but without the Codex Grey and second wash. I do mix in the occasional splinter camo zeltbahn, jacket or helmet cover to mix things up a little.

I know they've brought out new paints recently but I haven't got any, so rename to suit whatever the current equivalents are

EDIT: Cool - 500 posts

There really isn’t a definitive answer for the this as the colour and quality of German uniforms varied considerably during the war. As long as it’s grey or green/grey you should be fine. Personally I used Coat D’arms field grey, with Iron Grey for the helmets. The helmets are probably a little darker than they should be, but I like the contrast it gives.

Of course by late war there was lots of camo around, but there aren’t many hard and fast rules for that either, such was the variety. The FOW site has some cracking tutorials for painting camo smocks.

Like others have already said, the colors you've painted your infantry so far are fine, and the actual shade of Feldgrau uniforms varied quite a bit during the course of the war.

I've posted this picture before, but it illustrates the variation pretty well. All of these uniforms are technically Feldgrau.

Something else to note, there were also "reed green" uniforms issued to certain units, and tropical units (like the Afrika Korps) had a more olive green uniform. To add to the variation, the Luftwaffe tropical uniform was different than the Heer tropical uniform.

I use GW paints also...

DeathWorldGreen is my infantry base coat.
TheFang is my Luftwaffe Blue.
MechanicusStandardGrey is my base grey.
I use Nuln Oil as my black wash.
I use WaaaghFlesh and DoombullBrown as my camo colours.
ZandriDust is my base for weapons and tanks etc..

Overall they look pretty good and I am very happy with using these colours to represent my troops.
