After reading the recent Shadows of Treachery for the Horus Heresy series it brought back one of my biggest gripes with the series continuity so far.
The story The Dark King, (which I'm sure many of you will have already heard in audiobook format) tells a story, that in my opinion, does not fit in nicely anywhere in the Heresy timeline. That is of course Curze fleeing Dorn's custody and destroying his homeworld, Nostromo. FIrstly I find it odd that not one single Primarch commented on this during the build up to the heresy, despite at least two of them being there and Horus brings up Curze a few times before the Heresy kicks off. Secondly, and more glaringly, how much of an idiot is Dorn? His brother, who was bordering on censure anyway, attacks and nearly kills him. Murders several elite Emperors Children and Imperial Fists, flees retribution and destroys his home world before disappearing into the void. Then when the unthinkable happens and Warmaster Hours turns traitor, Dorn sends a punitive fleet to destroy the turncoats, gathering as many loyal legions as possible in a short space of time. Now when the Nightlords oh so conveniently, return from their unexplained absence, surely he would have been suspicious of his motivations. I mean Dorn is forced to realise that two of the supposedly most fervently loyal Primarchs, Fulgrim and Horus have turned, yet it doesn't even cross his mind that the borderline traitor and sociopath, Konrad Curze, might just be in league with them, and would maybe, just maybe be a very poor choice to send to his side.
It just feels really hedged into the series purely because it was original fluff but they had no real idea of how to effectively pull it off within the overall series. I'm not slating the story either, I like it fine, it just doesn't seem to work in the greater scheme of things. I kind of wish BL would release an official statement of little things they have already retconned out of the series since it started. For example, ADB pointed out at some point that recently they completely changed the idea of what makes a Legion, the early books seem to suggest that the average size was close to 10,000, with some like the Emperors Children being as low as 2000, whereas since deliverance lost we're seeing the more plausible sizes of 100,000 to 150,000 depending on legion. I know it's not supposed to be a perfect version of events, more of a perspective of History, but I would like a simple timeline of what's happened so far, just to clear up things like Outcast Dead ruining the Prospero invasion, and various other plot contradictions. Just wondering if I'm just being a stickler for details or if this is an issue for anyone else too.
