Well I'm doing something weird...painting Chaos Marines up white and silver. Not exactly Chaotic but I wanted to do something different. I got a pic up, it's not great and the model's nowhere near done but it's a decent WIP shot I think. The trim still needs to be done in silver and the white looks pretty sketchy, also a lot of details like the skin and backpack I haven't started on. I'm not sure what to do about the white exactly, I'm not sure how much more I should refine it...on one hand it looks interesting like this, but it also looks somewhat messy. Well, here's the picture, I'd like any input.

I like your approach for painting this difficult colour. Looks like the Marine has actually seen some fighting. Similar, but different at the same time, to what Migs has presented us recently. If the rest of the miniature is approached similarly, it will look good imo. But, if you start doing, for instance, some clean & crisp NMM on the weapons, a bright red face with cartoony highlights and the like, then it won't work anymore.

For the silver, I'd probably go for a darker metallic tone such as Boltgun to create better contrast with the white armour. Or, if you keep the very light, very silver trims, then I'd make the creases separating the silver from the white areas very well defined/dark.

If you'd like to see a different approach, check out this tutorial: http://www.brushthralls.com/White/index.php

Take that with a grain of salt as white isn't a colour I'm using much.

Hey, thanks a lot. Actually Migs' marines inspired this colour scheme for my Chaos marines! I probably won't do any NMM as I'm not too good at it. I started on the metal and I'm going for Boltgun with slight Mithril highlights, I think it looks pretty good so far. Once I get the model done I'll post another picture. I just have to decide about the backpack -- I'm unsure about whether I should do it like the rest of the model or maybe just all silver for some contrast.

I'll want to see that.

In the meantime, you can always look at some of my minis. They were not quite white, but pretty close... the approach was similar: http://www.daemonicaura.com/gallery/gallery_dg.html

Look at the Defiler especially, this is where I was taking the army, colour-wise, just before I sold it. The main colour was Vallejo Deck Tan highlighted up to White. Shadows were done with combination of that colour, VMC Green Ochre and Brown Ink.

I like the basic idea, but if it were my project, I'd put in a few more accent color touches. My favorite part of the model is that red tongue. Perhaps bloodstains on the weapons? You wouldn't want to overdo the red, but a few more touches might give the model more pop.

My two cents

I think this guy is looking pretty cool. I agree with the comments made by Jeanfrancois and tinfoil, and I'd add "How are you going to base them?"

Quite often the way models are based can affect the colors you need to add to (or subtract from) a model, especially when that model is predominantly white or black. Once you've got you basing scheme down you'll have a much better idea of "things to do" to the model.

Cheers

I agree totally with the previous comments. A little more distinction between the white and the silver would be good. And the red tongue totally jumps out at you. It would be cool if there was a little color in each model. Maybe something different in each one, or some connecting theme. Bloody blades is a good idea. The contrast is really nice.

I don't know if you've thought of for fluff, but it would be cool to have a ghostly/spectral feel to the chapter. Maybe use the rules for Thousand Sons (they are undead), or Legion of the Damned.

Thanks, actually in that picture I don't think any of the model is painted silver...the trim appears to be silvery because it was the only part that I didn't base Bleached Bone before I did the black ink wash. I've used boltgun metal now and the distinction is a lot better. I'll try the blood thing, it should work fairly well at least for this squad since almost every model has a chainsword or mutations which I could use to add some colour. Not going to post a picture right now as I have to re-do the head and arm, so I'll probably just hold off until I get the entire thing done then put it up. Still haven't decided about the pack.

I've thought about fluff a bit and was probably going to go for some kind of ghost-like feeling, as it is the list I've drawn up mostly relies on infiltrating Marines, so that works well I think. I'll probably just go with Black Legion rules because I want to keep my options open as far as what units I can take, and I prefer not to use special legion rules when making my own chapters (besides, I already did that once with Death Guard).
