I'm finally finished with the first unit! I've got another 60+ more figures to paint, but I'm going to take a break for now I think I'll resurrect this thread when I do and post more pictures!
In the mean time, check out more pictures on my site in my Ancient Persian Gallery LINK
Thanks

Thanks Hordini,
Kings of War plays extremely well I think. It's got a very similar flavour to Warhammer Ancients, except all of the fiddly movement rules and focus on list-building has been toned down to make games playable in a shorter amount of time. I like the rules a lot, and they're free so the price is tough to beat
Thanks again,
n.

They are indeed 28mm... From Wargames Factory... I know, I know, but I think they made a good set of figs here.
Thanks

Thanks! I'll have to check them out, especially if they're free. Warhammer Ancients flavor minus fiddly movement rules sounds good to me!

In a recent ebay order I got shipped extra miniatures by accident and they turned out to be ancient persians. The seller told me to keep them. So I think I'm going to grab some Greeks to fight them and start a similar KoWHAC project.

Balance in pick up games? Two people, each with their own goals for the game, design half a board game on their own without knowing the layout of the board and hope it all works out. Good luck with that. The faster you can find like minded individuals who want the same things from the game as you, the better. |

Yeah, Greek vs. Persian battles are a great colourful deal, so I recommend it!
I wouldn't recommend Warlord Greeks though, they are a lot smaller than your average plastic historical figure. I'd go with either Victrix or Wargames Factory.
Here are my tiny Warlord Greeks facing off against the largish Wargames Factory Persians:
Not terrible, but a noticeable difference.

The stuff I got by mistake was actually 1:72 plastic figures. Specifically these: http://www.plasticsoldierreview.com/Review.aspx?id=516 At 24mm tall, they're close to 20mm historicals than to any other metal scale. I've experience painting these figures from years ago and Zvezda's infantry for both the Persians & Greeks is amazing: http://www.plasticsoldierreview.com/Review.aspx?id=383 http://www.plasticsoldierreview.com/Review.aspx?id=335 You have to take some additional care in painting and varnish, but it's a scale with a lot of history in the military modeling hobby.

There is a surprising number of different figures available in 1/72 plastic, nowadays.

I have painted my share of 20mm aka 1/72 scale figs as well.... nearly as many 15mm or 28mm figs, but I don't mind the bendy plastic that make up the 1/72 stuff.

Those are the immortal miniatures greeks that are small. Warlords own greeks (macedonians) are much more in scale with larger lines I believe

Warlord games took over immortal miniatures and thats why your seeing so many coming out .they are ones that hadnt been seen yet when they took them over .when i say take over a dont mean that in a GW type way ,the guy who ran it wanted to head off and do charity work or something so warlord and he agreed on a deal which they were both happy with .

Kings of War is a totally different set of rules to WAB or similar sets. The biggest difference is that the acting side does all the movement, attack rolls, morale rolls (yes, for the opponent's army). Once that side is done, the other side does the same. It is clearly intended to be a tournament set with timed player turns.
I prefer the 'interaction' of at least rolling my own armor saves and morale tests when 'inactive', but ymmv.
The above is clearly only my opinion based on playing a few games.

Kings of War... that's the fantasy rules by Mantic?
