The Origin of The Diseased Sons
The Diseased Sons Legion was a company of Death Guard that was corrupted by the Destroyed Plague along with the rest of the Death Guard. When Mortarion and the main Death Guard force settled on the Plague Planet, some of the Death Guard decided to remain behind with Typhus and the Terminus Est. These Plague Marines, Typhus's loyal followers, called themselves the Diseased Sons. For 10,000 years they have traveled in a plague fleet near to Typhus's, corrupting planets and spreading disease wherever they go.
The Conquering of Octavius VI and The Story of Chaos Lord Acursius Pox's Cape
Chaos Lord Acursius Pox looked down on the planet from the viewing platform of the Eternal Pestilence's front bridge. He surveyed the sweeping white capped mountains, shining oceans, and sprawling hive cities of Octavius VI. Pox was not impressed, disgusted even, but he knew that soon this world would be fungoid and bloated with decay just as the other worlds the plague fleet conquered.
He turned around, done with his viewing, and started barking orders at the nearest plague marines. "What are you waiting for! Load the dreadclaws! Rain pestilence on this world!" The plague marines separated into squads, scrambling to load vehicles, ammunition, and themselves into the drop pod shoots. "All must go! Eternal poxes and decay for father Nurgle!" As Acursius howled his prayer to Nurgle, a black cloud of flies appeared buzzing through the plague ship. It was a sign from Nurgle. This world would die.
First Sargent Crowell surveyed the sky with his soot blackened binoculars. He was on sentry duty and if anything out of the ordinary happened, he would be the first to know. Looking higher, he saw several burning dots in the sky. What are those? He wondered. The space marine planetary guard had left a month ago and if they came back it would not be in their transports of war, the drop pods. That left only one answer in his mind. "Chaos!" He shouted across the fortress wall to the other sentries "Send a message to the commissar, Chaos is here!"
A guardsman burst through the door into the general's meeting chamber. Hurriedly straightening himself up, he said "Sir, Chaos ships just appeared on radar, traitor drop pods are descending on our position. There's too many! What should we do?!" The guardsmen was then promptly executed by the Commissar. "Cowardice is a crime" said Commissar Thrawn. "Lieutenant," continued Thrawn, "Post men on the walls, get the radars up, we need to check this situation out." "Battle stations!" barked Lieutenant Dante to the soldiers standing by.
Outside on the ramparts of the Imperial fortress, the guardsmen were lining up along the wall, loading lasguns and readying themselves. Autocannon and lascannon turrets were manned with expert timing and soon everyone was waiting silently. Sargent Crowell walked the lines, inspecting and ensuring everyone was ready. As he was about to speak, the first dreadclaw embedded itself in the ground with a huge thud. "Lascannons, Fire!"shouted Crowell. But just as the lascannons opened fire on the first pod, dozens more collided into the earth.
Lascannons blazed at the pods and a few exploded, scattering decaying metal and pus across the ground. Then the pods bottom hatches opened, and the traitors emerged. The guardsmen on the ground opened fire with their lasguns, but to no avail. Their lasbolts merely burned the plague marine's decaying skin and they felt no pain. "Rip them open!" shouted Lieutenant Dante, "First rank, Fire! Second rank, Fire!" Two heretics dropped, but the rest kept steadily moving forwards.
"Infidels!"howled Plague Sorceror Morpheus, "You shall taste the flies of Nurgle!" And from his helmeted mouth burst a huge cloud of flies that swarmed forward into the guardsmen's ranks, devouring all in their path. "Forward brothers!" he shouted "For Nurgle!" The plague marines broke into a steady run, firing off putrid bolter shots that exploded into the guardsmen.
A few of the plague marines broke into the guardsmen's lines, hacking with diseased blades and bolter handles. The guardsmen were knocked back, but soon they surrounded the few traitors and brought them down with bayonets.
Acursius stepped out of the command drop pod and activated his power sword. It glowed green with nurglitch energy. He knew it hungered for Imperial dogs, and it would have them. He gestured his terminator bodyguards forwards "Onward! We make no stop until this world is conquered in the name of Nurgle!" And with that they broke into a run, eager to spread the plague.
On the ramparts of the Imperial fortress, Commissar Thrawn spotted the Chaos Lord, bloated and decayed, but bedecked in the finest armor and wielding a power sword. "Bring him down!" He ordered the guardsmen. The Imperials opened fire on the traitor general, but few shots were accurate and those that were bounced harmlessly off his ancient power armor. "Ready the tanks!" snapped the Commissar, "We need heavy artillery! Also ready my chimera, I'm going out."
The first five drop pods worth of plague marines had been defeated by lasgun volleys, but the rest were proving more difficult. These wore terminator armor, and only high powered shots at close range could defeat them. They barreled into Imperial lines, smashing guardsmen with power fists and lighting claws. But it had been a diversion, for at the same time, Plague Sorceror Morpheus was kneeling before an icon of Nurgle, casting weird enchantments. Then, all of a sudden, he stopped. The battle froze in time, and a hole in reality opened. Plaguebearers of Nurgle clambered through the hole in realspace, accompanied by a Daemon Prince of Nurgle, Oderous the Unclean.
As Commissar Thrawns Chimera excited the side gate of the fortress, he felt no doubt. The emperor was with him, and so were his guard of stormtroopers. The Chimera pulled up to the forefront of the battle and stopped, defying the daemons and renegades racing to the walls. The traitors halted for a minute, but then laughed and continued. What inside a chimera could hurt them? Then, suddenly, battle cannons erupted into the Death Guard lines, bringing down plague marine and plaguebearer alike. Accompanied by the sound of the Leman Russ's righteous fury, the Commissar charged from his Chimera.
Acursius surveyed the scene. Guardsmen were being torn apart by his terminators, and the plaguebearers were attacking from the side along with Oderous, some were even climbing the walls. Everything was going to plan he thought, until he felt the surge of the battle cannons plowing into his ranks. Blast! he thought, We must reach the fortress! So caught up in this was he that he barely noticed the Commissar charging towards him. He lifted his weapon up to parry just in time, blocking the blue blade of the Commissars power sword.
"You dare attack me!"spat Acursius, "I am the chosen of Nurgle!" Then he lifted his power sword from the parry and swung at Thrawn. The Commissar ducked, pulling out his bolt pistol and firing two shots at the traitor which bounced off his bloated form. "Come dog!" laughed Pox, "Where is your Emperor now!" Then he swung again at Thrawn, coming down low. The Commissar jumped, the blade barely clipping his boot heel, melting the rubber. They then engaged in combat with their power swords, equally matched opponents. For hours they dueled, for his belief in the Emperor gave Thrawn strength to battle the traitor.
In the end, the Imperial lines collapsed, and Commissar Thrawn was overpowered, but Acursius gave him a chance. "Join us," he said once he had Thrawn at swordpoint "You could become a great champion of Nurgle!" "Kill me," said Thrawn "but the Imperium will endure."
"Very well," said Acursius.
The planet Octavius VI was taken and transformed into another plague planet, but that one holds a special memory for Chaos Lord Acursius Pox as where he met one of his finest opponents. To this day he still wears Commissar Thrawn's cape as a trophy.
"Khorne" Berzerkers of the Diseased Sons
The warlike Nurgle Berzerkers that follow the Diseased Sons are sometimes mistaken for worshipers of Khorne. However, they are just as fervent about Nurgle as the rest of the Diseased Sons, and see Khorne as an inferior god. They were originally a band of regular World Eaters Chaos Space Marines, but have since joined with the Diseased Sons. They were exposed to a disease that had the same effect as severe rabies in an animal. Now they only look for conflict, frothing at the mouth and waiting for their next enemy.
Plague Fleet Eternal Pestilence
Plague Fleet Eternal Pestilence is the plague fleet that follows closely behind Typhus's fleet and his ship, the Terminus Est. Eternal Pestilence is led by the leader of the Diseased Sons, Chaos Lord Acursius Pox, but direct orders are still taken from Typhus, master of all Nurgle marines. From time to time however, Eternal Pestilence ventures out from the main fleet to spread decay elsewhere, always catching up with the main fleet at another time.
