The other day this idea just popped into my head, and I liked it so I may just try and develop it some more.
If you have played the Galaxy at War mode of SWB2, that's where the idea came from. It would basically involve a large map composing of (20-30?) smaller maps, all linked together. Each of the armies (could be played with as many as you like, but in this case it will be 2) start on a certain edge of the larger map, and whatever land they are standing on would be turned into their territory. The game would be played with several separate battalions under the same "general" on each side. For this example, let's say the rules are there have to be four 500pt armies and one 1000pt army, that can be arranged in whatever order the player likes on their board.
The game would then proceed in turns. On every turn, each player could advance one of their battalions into a slot vertical or horizontal to them, and if the space was not occupied by an opponent, it would become theirs. This would continue until a battalion moves into a space where an enemy battalion is located, at which time the two battalions would duke it out on the warhammer table, in accordance with what units those particular battalions contained.
The losing battalion is destroyed and removed from the board, with the winning one moving into their spot, chess-style. However, any units that are completely destroyed do not return to the victorious battalion.
All victory points are kept in a constant tally. Here's where the SW inspiration really kicks in. Those points can then be used to purchase various things during your turn, such as the restoration of damaged battalions, respawning battalions that were completely destroyed (back at the starting point), and temporary, one-time abilities such as an extra spell for a magic-user or increased initiative on a chosen unit. The better the ability, the higher the cost.
There would also be a single general that represents the general of the entire army, not just a single battalion (what are normally generals in matches would probably be called "commanders" or some such). If these get killed, they cannot be respawned and they give the opponent a bajillion victory points.
The game would continue until one person claims all the territory on the board or the other person gives up.
Sorry if the explanation is a bit long-winded, but does it sound like an interesting idea? It would probably need a lot of balancing, but I think it could be a ton of fun.
