Subject: Brand new to warmachine - Starting Cryx

Hi guys,
I am about to start a Cryx army for Warmachine and have written a 25 point list building on the battle group box set
I was wondering if anyone could offer any helpful tips regarding the list or tactics
Warwitch Deneghra
Slayer
Deathripper
Deathripper
Reaper
Skarlock Thrall
Machine Wraith
Pistol Wraith
Pistol Wraith
I took the Defiler out the list because I heard they are pretty useless
so what do you think?
Thanks in advance

Looks reasonable. You might have an issue running so many jacks though. In order to get the best out of Deneghra she really wants to be casting spells, rather than fueling warjacks.
But as a new player this is a very good start. No units to confuse as you're learning the rules.

That's good to know then I literally crammed together what I though might work
I probably should have mentioned that my friend is starting Retribution of Scyrah and will be my main opponent so any specific information regarding that is also welcome as well as general stuff
Thanks

Ok, the main weakness of Retribution is Stealth, they have no way around the ability. But they do have some abilities that will absolutely screw your stuff over. Most (if not all) of their jacks have magical guns which means that incorporeal models are always under threat from them. The other major issue is the Mage Hunter Strike force who damage warjacks easily. And Cryx's DEF 13 isn't really enough to save them.
But there are ways to deal with this. Use terrain to hide the incorporeal models till you need them and Crippling Grasp on the Strike Force will slow them down and make them easy to hit so that's a good thing to do.
What really matters is which caster your friend is playing:
Garryth, stay the hell away from him. If he gets a clear lane to you it's highly likely that you'll die. 12.5" without outside help.
Kaelyssa, Bannishing Ward will make something immune to your spells. Witch Hound is something else to be aware of. If any of your spells hit her or her jacks they'll get a free move and attack. At that point it might be best to just fuel the jacks with your focus.
Ossyan, heavies will die to his feat. Admonition can stop melee assassination as well.
Rahn, this guy can assassinate from far, far away with the right models. If Battle Mages are on the table, get Crippling Grasp on them ASAP.
Ravyn, Ranged assassination threat so anything without stealth is likely to be hit, a lot.
Vyros, you can't hide from his jacks so be careful of them more than his troops.

In my opinion deathjack is a must have for any cryx list.
He isnt that complicated to use and you can cut down on some of your jacks. It will also free up focus from your caster since he generates his own. The hardest part about playing him is just keeping him alive against jacks since he can heal whenever he kills a living model. Ghostwalking deathjack and having him trample through your enimies infintry screen is a great way to heal him and get right up to the caster. If it happens to make it up to the caster then you most likely have killed him or her. Also being able to give him 5 focus (max of 8 if he is full up on soul tokens) Wrong about the 8 focus. sorry. can make him a murder machine
Just some food or thought..

Why does every cryx player seem to reach for the Deathjack? It's very good, I don't disagree there, but it is not something for the learning player in my opinion. Nor at low point games without great protection. It is far too squishy to be played when it costs a third or more of your points for that list.
Oh, and you're wrong about the way souls and focus interact on the Deathjack. He gets a soul for living enemy destroyed within 2", not just those he kills. Then, before normal allocation (assuming no repairs happened), they turn into focus. Then the warcaster can put focus on the Deathjack as long as it doesn't have more than 3 as a result of allocation. Finally the skulls of hate add one focus point each ignoring the allocation limit as the Deathjack gains focus from the skulls. So saying the Deathjack has a limiit of 8 focus isn't correct.

My bad then. I thought the focus from soul tokens were additional just like the skulls of hate focus. Not that i have ever had a chance to have him get and keep three soul tokens in a game. Usually used for repairs. I just think that Deathjack is something that a new player should learn to use because in bigger games Deathjack is such an amazing asset. If anything just for the distraction. Also thought it might cut down on Denny's focus use so she can get off more spells.

You're right about the extra focus being helpful and the Deathjack is very good in big games. But I've always thought it best to learn the simple jacks first then move onto the big scary stuff. Case in point, the misunderstanding about souls. Deathjack doesn't have a limit for the amount he can have.

Okay. Well, thanks for that advice about the soul tokens. I really have to stop letting my brother talk me into rules that hinder me vs. him. Next time ill make sure to look it up myself.
Oh, and going back to the original topic, I feel like you should maybe start of trying out a small unit just to understand how the mechanics work. The Withershadow Combine is my all time favorite but would probably get confusing with the rules. Maybe Some Bane Thralls withe the UA. They tend to be great in almost all situations. Plus later playing you will probably want to use some infantry since you, well, have to. And Cryx has some great great infantry.

And some cheap, disposable infantry. While learning the game I stuck with Deneghra for a long time, and learned just how many different ways she can kill the enemy. My general theory on Cryx List Building is to cram SO MANY high value threats into the list that your opponant can't stop them all, or they focus on killing the wrong one. Then you have to learn how to do them in with anything. Mechanithralls? Check. Scrap Thrall Assassination? Check. Fully stocked Pistolwraiths? Check. Teacup through the chest? Check.
I've seen people freak out about Tartarus and drop him, only to allow my Pistol wraiths to get into a perfect position. I've seen opponants burn down my wraiths, only to let Tarty daisy chain Thralls into the caster. I've seen people focus on Arcnodes only to get charged by the Lady herself, or stack defense to over 20 only to get hit by a min-deviation Scourge and then slaughtered at range. (HAHA DIAF, Cain!)
Denny is about options, and knowing your options thoroughly enough that even if you only have a bicycle chain, an old lighter, and some dryer lint, you can kill your enemy. She's the MacGyver of Cryx casters.

Good news. This is the best time in the hobby. Full of promise. GW lets us down each time and we know it but secretly we're hoping that this is the edition that GW gives us a balanced game that can also be played competitively at tournaments. I'm loving it.

Not sold on the Reaper at all in Denny's list - as mentioned previously she likes her focus for spell casting, and sadly Reaper is a two focus jack for min efficiency with a boosted attack roll for range plus a boosted damage roll to drag (unless your target is under the influence of her debuffs).
If you can find the points somewhere, and like the playstyle of the Reaper, then I would highly suggest Malice as a substitute.
Also, I can't say enough how priceless the Warwitch Siren is in any Cryx list.
